Solved Interpret Belarc Advisor report

I want to make sure I understand this.

In Belarc Advisor report, under Software Licenses I get

Microsoft - Windows 7 Professional (x64)XXXXX-OEM-XXXXXXX-XXXXX (Key: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX)e
(I have replaced all the digits with X's.)

My computer, purchased new six months ago, did not have a Windows sticker attached, either on the outside or inside when the battery compartment is opened.

In preparation for a worst-case scenario requiring reinstall of Windows, I want to be sure I have the Windows product key. Footnote "e" says, "This may be the manufacturer's factory installed product key rather than yours. You can change it to your product key using the procedure at http://www.belarc.com/msproductkeys.html." This links to a Microsoft page "Update your Windows product key".

Should I do this now? And where can I download a Windows 7 Pro install disk? This, too, did not come with the computer.

No need to worry about CDs and keys. Just download the free macrium reflect, while the computer is working well. If you have a problem, just use the image made by Macrium. It saved me several times. Its free and easy to use. If you still want a CD you can go here.

The Key: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX part is called the Product Key on the COA/Certificate of Authenticity sticker/label. That is the key needed for install and activation. The group of X's with OEM is the Product ID, gets created during the install.

Legally a new PC with Windows 7 installed MUST have a COA sticker.
I would contact the place where you bought the PC and see what they have to say.
Hopefully it's a reputable company.

Did your computer come with Windows 7 installed or did someone install Windows 7 after the purchase?
The computer might of come with Windows 8 and that is the reason their is no COA sticker.

As Layback Bear says, the chances are that this machine shipped with Windows 8 Pro, downgraded to Windows 7 Pro - in which case it should have a Windows 8 Pro sticker visible (but NOT a COA sticker).

If you run an MGADiag report, we should be able to tell, and advise properly.

Having said that, if this machine did ship with a downgrade, the ONLY way you can reinstall Windows 7 is using the manufacturer's Recovery media, since there is no COA sticker, and no chance of getting one without purchasing a new Windows license.

Came with W7 pre-installed but I seem to remember a Windows 8 install disk also came with it. Maybe that has the missing sticker. Been looking for it but can't find it at the moment.

The data here is all consistent with a Windows 8 Pro machine downgraded to Windows 7 Pro.

There is no point attempting to use retail or downloaded media for a reinstall as it will not activate.
You need to follow HP's instructions on creating the Windows 7 Recovery media for your machine, or order a set from HP.

Well, if you read my long thread about my first use of Macrium Reflect, my experience has not been too good. The confusing warning about rescue media not being able to access my drives is something that troubles me greatly.

You need to follow HP's instructions on creating the Windows 7 Recovery media for your machine

I made two disks, an HP Windows 7 recovery disk and an HP driver recovery disk. The first of these two includes a boot.wim (180,049 KB) and an install.wim (4,031,990 KB). Would that be sufficient for a reinstall of Windows 7 or is it only for repair?

Edit to add, for what it's worth: on my D: drive labeled HP_RECOVERY ( D: ), there is an even bigger file in the "sources" folder: FPP.WIM (10,469,739 KB), created on the same date that I made the two HP recovery disks.

The recovery Media is designed to return the system to the exact same state as it left the factory - some companies allow partial recoveries as well. Check your manual for details.

Unless I have misunderstood something important, the answer to my question appears clear now.

1. I need to find the Windows 8 install disk that came with the computer and check if it has a COA sticker. If it does not, I will have to contact the vendor who sold me the computer.
2. I do not need to download a Windows 7 install disk because the HP Recovery Disk is capable of restoring my system to factory condition.

Marking this as solved for now.

You don't get a COA with Win 8, or with a Win 7 that is a "downgrade" from Win 8.
I thought the PC came with Win 7 pre-installed in my previous post...

Yes, Windows 7 pre-installed but I'm pretty sure a Win 8 install disk was in the box too.
