intranet webpage ;)

hello everyone,
I would like to know how to set up an intranet webpage. For example when you go to a hotel and it automaticaly re-directs you to their wepage.

My old laptop (see spects) will be retired this year and would want to use it as a server. it already has iis 7 installed, but how would i go about acomplishing this?

It would be ideal if i could have mac filtering so that all the "recognized pcs" at my house can avoid the intranet webpage, while other(public) pcs cant.

The public pcs would stil have internet acces, but will go to the "inranet" page first.
So any ideas?

You can use IIS to host the page itself but at the router level, the computers have to know to go to this page first, hence the router software.

There is software you can use depending on the router being used to get a Splash Screen for users. Here are some suggestions you can hopefully make use of as these websites offer something along the lines of what you're looking for:

The DNS redirector looks promising. does it have mac or ip filtering, that way the "known" computers dont get a splash page?

As far as I can tell, it does not have MAC Filtering, though I haven't used the software. You may want to look into a router that support DD-WRT so you can install that firmware and use this: NoCatSplash - DD-WRT Wiki

That does have MAC Address Filtering and can give a Splash Page to all other users.

Hmm, the firware flash dosn't support my device: westell w237 OMEd to Zerizon. I was hoping for something more open source/free

Well, technically the software is free, the problem is you need accompanying hardware to run it. You can also always setup a Linux Virtual Machine to run a router distro that provides this functionality.

I would prefer to run it in vmware workstation. that idea sounds realy good.

Endian is good, also I've seen ClearOS and it's good as well for this kind of thing. You may have to play around and fiddle with this a bit or search for other alternatives but a VM should do you real good and make it much easier to manage. You could probably use the NAT function in VMware Workstation to create a separate network for these users if you wanted to.

ok... now for the research begin. im not a huge fan of linux, i have used ubuntu and similar "flavors".

Yeah, I can understand that. I'm not a big fan of Linux either but from the times I've played with the Endian Software and seen it in action, I can tell you it's relatively simple to set up but also is very granular in its securtiy features. You'll probably want to research on the NAT feature of VMware Workstation and also how to set up separate networks. When I get my new computer set up in about 2 days, I'll probably tinker with Endian again to refresh my memory and setting up a Portal page.

okay, now another question. my laptop only has one lan nic, but 2 wifi cards, 1 internal atheros and one external relatek. will that be a problem?

Not at all. As far as the VM is concerned, it can share (in bridged mode) resources based off of one NIC if it had to.
