Solved Investing software window pop-up size unusable, need workaround

I use a stock trading program in windows 7 on a 14in widescreen laptop, it does not run in a browser, it's standalone.

Problem: after a backtest is run a pop-up window appears to allow you to change the to/from dates in the pop-up window. However, it covers from the top of my screen to the bottom and the "ok" button is not visable/usable. This window cannot be resized, it can be moved down by dragging from the top of the window, but cannot be moved up to expose the "ok". It is not resizable, it's a fixed dimension popup.

My only workaround at this time is to go to windows control panel and manually reduce text size - but for this to take effect it requires a reboot - after reboot I can see the "ok" and software works, but the other text is too small to read, so I need another workaround.

Any ideas?

Does the software publisher have a support forum? If so I would apprise them of the problem. The developer(s) may not even use a Laptop to test out the application and could be unaware of the issue.

Yes, the software publisher does have active support - I discussed this limitation with them - they took it to the lead of their IT dept and the reply was they would not resize the window or make it adjustable - I would have to fix it via W7 using the reboot fix and live with small print.

Unusual response since a very similar popup in their program is fully resizeable and moveable/functional.

But thanks for your suggestion.

It probably won't work in this case. But it may be worth a shot. I wrote a free utility named WinDim. The reason I wrote it was to make it easy to create a window the same size as another by taking the position and size info of the existing window.

To try it in your case, unzip to an empty folder and run WinDim.exe. Size some window the size you wish the PopUp Window to be and hit Winkey g combination. A message box should pop up telling the size info and title of the window it read. Now click the window you wish to resize so that it has the focus. Press Winkey s combination. It will ask you if you wish to set size, position, both or cancel.

If it sets the PopUp Window to the new size and it's usable then we got lucky. :)
You can download WinDim from my page
Miles Ahead Software

Edit: If you have a good idea what size you want the PopUp Window you can take a short cut. Just make sure it is the active window and hit Winkey s. WinDim will show a dialog box and you may put in height and width. Then click the size button.

Let me know if it works. There are other utilities that will watch for a certain window and automatically set size and/or position on it when it opens.

Resize a window that's fixed and won't resize

I use (free) software to resize some windows that can't usually be resized. It might not work on your program but it could be worth a shot.

http://www.digitallis.co.uk/pc/ResizeEnable/

How to use:

Run the software by navigating to the executable "ResizeEnableRunner.exe" - right click and choose "Run As Admin"

Then run your problem program and attempt to resize the window.

I just tried WinDim on a non resizable window. It says "Target window cannot be resized" (I wrote it awhile ago and forget it checked for that attribute) but it did let me set the position Top to a negative number. This might let you get at the OK Button. But the tool in Callender's link may have a better chance.

If the windows is a standard dialog the keyboard shortcuts should work:
Enter - OK
ESC - cancel

That's cheating. Too easy.

All- Thanks. I am at work now and do not have access to the program, will try tonight.

Miles,Callender: thanks for the program options.

Miller: I did not even think of that, so simple, I am able to enter the new to/from dates into the window, so if I can just hit enter as you suggest it will be awesome!!!!!!!!!!! I will try enter and escape, if neither works - maybe I will call the vendor and ask if there is another hotkey that will work. I will report-thanks
