Ionized CFL

I just saw this commercial for the first time:

it caught my eye, but one aspect of it's filtration function concerns me. I know that ionized particles will collect on all nearby surfaces...ceiling, walls, furniture, etc. unless there is something that collects these particles first. Looking at these bulbs, there is nothing of this type of purpose apparent. Does anyone actually use these?

I don't understand your laughter, because the idea has merit...if it could be fully implimented. However, I doubt that it is, so I have been trying to think of a way to make a particle collector myself.

My primary interest is find a way to prevent tobacco smoke from collecting on the walls and ceiling of my apt (comments about quitting smoking are not called for). As is, this would make the problem worse, which means that they are not worth their price.

I'm not certain if ionization in this manner means charging the particles positively or negatively, but whichever it may be, there need to be an oppositely charged surface very near the bulbs (like a lampshade). If a shade was used, it would need to be easily washed, or cheaply disposible.

EDIT: How about a stainless steel mesh for the lampshade. It could be charged separately from the bulb and do the collecting right? If someone wants to manufacturer a lamp using these bulbs and my shade idea, they can include me in their patent, and I will also be their guinea pig testing it.

EDIT: If this mesh were of the proper aperature, it would cast an interesting pattern in the room, which might be appealing in itself.

EDIT: I even have a name for it...The Smoke Arrester. Motto: See the light as never before.

I knew that someone wouldn't be able to resist, but I have tried Blucigs, which is supposed to be the best of electronic cigarettes, and I feel that I wasted my money, because they were tasteless, unsatisfying and difficult to puff. If someone made an electronic cigarettes that met my expectations, I would go for it, but that is not going to happen.

The closest that I have found is Stonewall tablets. They are made of tobacco, but modified in some fashion and you let them melt in your mouth. This does eliminate smoke, but I doubt that they are healthy. Some of the worst cancers that I know about are those of people who chew tobacco. One such person that I know of had his entire lower jaw removed, leaving only a dangling flap of skin where his jaw had been. I would prefer to die from cancer than to live that way.

Maybe someone will combine that light bulb and an electronic cigarette, then you'll be all set. :shock:




FYI: I smoked almost 30 years so I don't really have an issue with smokers, except they now stink (the cigarettes) to be around.

I'm sticking to the good old fashioned cigarettes, and good old fashioned painting, with help from my buddies, and a lot of bear. (it works just fine)

FYI: I smoked almost 30 years so I don't really have an issue with smokers, except they now stink (the cigarettes) to be around.

Perhaps you should now be like a pipe smoker, and not inhale. or breathe through your mouth when around a smoker.

I would also, except that they have become too expensive for me. I had been rolling my own, until the US moffia heisted the tax on rolling tobacco from $14.75 per 1 lb bag to $55, and most smoke stores stopped carrying it.

I have now resorted to little cigars, which I can still buy online for ~$10 per carton, but they are not as healthy as the cigarettes that I could make before, with tobacco without any additives (which I believe is the most unhealthy portion of tobacco).

Even with the little cigars, my doctor is still amazed at how well my test results turn out on each exam. I am going to start growing my own tobacco, but I'm very limited in how many plants that I can grow in an apt. It would be nice to have at least a regular yard that I could garden, or better yet, an acre or two.

The idea is awesome. I was actually working on making something myself that would use a similar concept to remove dust.

What they don't mention is that this ionization (which negatively charges dust) creates ozone. Ozone (too much anyways) is bad and makes breathing difficult (specifically for asthma people).

With a little work (and perhaps the lampshade idea), this idea will work.
