iPhone Can't Connect to Internet via Ad-Hoc Wifi

Up until yesterday, I could connect my iPhone to the internet via my Win 7 laptop using an ad-hoc network and internet connection sharing. Now I can connect the two with the wifi ad-hoc network, and my internet connection is shared, but the iPhone just can't see the internet connection. I know it's a Win 7 problem because the iphone connects to the net fine using an ad-hoc network and connection sharing when I boot my laptop (MacBook) into OSX (snow leopard).

Both networks (3G internet and wifi ad-hoc) are classed as 'work' networks in Win 7. Can you help ? it's a real pain having to switch to OSX to update my iPhone.....

Things I changed recently - installed Boot Camp 3.1 64bit (am running Win 7 Ultimate 64bit).

You haven't mentioned whether you are using wireless or wired network. If wireless, the Iphone should connect to your network using wifi and use the internet. I'm pretty sure you already know this.

Edit: I tried with WPA2-Personal and was not able to connect to my adhoc ICS. It works when i set the security to WEP. I'm not sure why though. Will keep testing.

Could it be the iphone cannot use WPA2-Personal, as this is what my router and W7 wireless security is set to.

The issue is not with your network but with your iphone!
Your Iphone does not update thru the internet but via sync attached to your system. Is your wifi open or do you use encryption? You must use the settings option in your iphone to select your named network that you want your iphone to link up with, if you use password encryption than the settings option must have the passwors or your network will block the iphone.

The Iphone detects the wireless network like any other wifi devices. Like i have tested, with the adhoc network, my Iphone only detect the adhoc network when the adhoc network is setup with WEP. I just had a quick look at my W7 wireless option. And under Security type, if set to Shared, encryption is WEP.

And a quick look again into adhoc creation, when setting up adhoc network, i see Security type having option of WEP. No encryption option available during adhoc creation. So begs the question, why is W7 adhoc saying Security as WEP and W7 wireless saying Encryption WEP.

Thanks Adrian, but it doesn't say why my iphone cannot detect SSID with WPA, only works with WEP.

And there is definiately a diffrence between security type and encryption type. As i said when you go to create adhoc connection you only get to choose security and WEP is featured, whereas in W7 wireless, you have WEP coming under Encryption. My W7 wireless doesn't have WEP as a security optrion.

It's not the iphone at fault - it connects easily to ad-hoc wifi when I boot my macbook in OSX (SL). When I try to do the same in Win 7, it connects to the wifi network, but no internet, even though Win 7 says the internet connection is shared...

Can you confirm this to be true or not

No - when I go to "manage wireless networks" I can double-click on each network to bring up its properties and there's a 'security' tab. WEP is under 'encryption' for both persistent and ad-hoc wireless networks, and does not appear under 'security'.

That is exactly what i got as well. It seem W7 adhoc wireless network needs security option to have WPA/WPA2 (as my network is WPA2, i'm not sure if changing my network to WEP would work, i have not tried), for iphone to connect. As it stand, with WEP, W7 adhoc just says "waiting for users..." and the iphone cannot connect to it.

That's not the same as my problem. I am able to make ad-hoc wireless networks of all flavours, open and secure, and the iphone and PC can connect without a hitch. The problem is that while they seem to connect OK, and Win 7 is set up to share its 3G internet connection, the iphone simply can't seem to reach the internet. When I go to an internet app such a facebook, I get the rotating "wait" symbol and eventually I get "not connected to internet".

Are you sure the adhoc wireless connection is not from W7. That is you cannot obtain internet off the iphone, rather the iphone can obtain internet off W7?

I got as far as having set up an adhoc wifi network on win 7 with WPA2 Personal and tried to connect to it with the iphone. The iphone asked for my password, and then sat at the 'joining network' screen without changing. The little wifi icon appeared at the top of the screen.

Meantime the adhoc network didn't show up in the wireless networks list in the sharing center, but it did show up in the little popup when you click the network icon in the tray, where its status was "waiting for users" (while iphone is 'joining network') I disconnected from it and tried reconnecting, but win 7 couldn't reconnect even though I entered the correct password.

That waiting for users status...was W7 wireless able to accept the iphone as incoming user? As i also get this waiting for users message, and my iphone failed to join, i do not know if this message goes away after, once the iphone was able to join.

The adhoc wireless will show in the Manage wireless network. I do not think in the sharing center, you can get both normal wireless and adhoc wireless showing, as i believe W7 either uses the normal wifi or the adhoc. One wireless adapter (physical) cannot be used with two connections at one time.

ICS!!! make sure yo internet ICS is pointed to your 3g connection, and thent he 3G connection has the Gateway/IP address of 192.168.0.1

then on your iphone you will have to enter the IPs manually

IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
