ir blaster through audio

just a thought that came to mind. i was recently connecting my comcast stb to my new win7 pc when i got the all too familiar "no ir hardware" error. totally mad at MSOFT i go online and buy the blaster hardware. i later then found an ir emmiter in the stb box and to my surprise there was a standard 3.5 mm jack on the other end. so my question is, instead of using a special 3.5mm port, is there a way i could connect the emmiter to a standard audio output on the back of my pc and use some special software and use that instead of spending 30 bucks on the ir kit?

The IR Blaster is to be plugged into a compatible Windows 7 IR Receiver. You should consult the provider of your STB.
