Irregular boot up

Hi...I have had this problem on 2 of my latest 'cold starts'....when I turn the PC on after a night/ day where it has been off...it will not boot. It will hang at the 'windows is starting screen' until I have to turn off and try again. When I try again I get the message that Windows did not start normally last time and I should try to repair or start normally. Both choices don't work.

The only thing both times that has seen me actually boot the PC successfully is to turn off, unplug the main HD (Sata cable and power cable) plug them back in and go from there. When I do that I get the repair/ or start normally option...I choose start normally'....and the PC has booted up ok.

So does anyone know what this sounds like?

I have the latest bios for my mobo.

ps...once the PC is on I can restart it no problem...I can even shut down and restart....it just seems that after a prolonged length of time being off...the PC will not boot.

What is this a symptom of??

thanks

Check both Windows and hardware:

Boot the Win7 DVD repair console or Repair CD, click through to Startup Repair to run it multiple times. Post back any issues found.

Check in Event Viewer>Admin View for errors at time of startup, and repeat errors. Google text and ID# to find how others have resolved them. Check also the Performance log on Advanced Tools page accessed by clikcking the WEI score link at Computer>Properties for logged events at time of hang. Look for cued issues on Tools page and Generate a System Health Report.

Post back a screenshot of your full maximized Disk Mgmt drive map with listing, using SNipping Tool in Start Menu.

Upgrade BIOS. If current, reset CMOS: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/tp/clearcmos.htm Remove anything other than DVD drive and Win7 HD from BIOS Boot order menu.

Change the HD cable, try HD in another mobo port, to test both cable and port.

Download, burn to CD and Run memtest86 CD for 5-6 passes or overnight. http://www.memtest86.com/download.html

Burn also HD maker's diag/repair full CD scan: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

Thankyou very much. When I am home from work I will follow all those suggestions.

Based on my reading it could be that a bios flash to the beta FC1 bios may fix the problem. I have read some reports of this being effective.

Currently my bios is FB....and I flashed TO that bios in order to correct a problem with the mobo not recognising all 6g of ram

Seems to be some issues with this mobo

I flashed to FC1 and am now getting this blue screen error on cold boot ups:

Can you boot into Safe Mode? If so, use the tool pinned in Crashes and Debugging Forum to upload your BugCheck report to that forum where the real geniuses reside. They will get it sorted with you quickly.

If no Safe Mode, you can browse to and copy out the bugcheck file using Win7 DVD repair console or Repair CD via the Load Drivers link: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/93347-copy-paste-windows-recovery-console.html

If unable to get traction with the known cause of the Bluescreen, I would flash it back to the previous BIOS, but wait to hear what others advise as well.'

I am calling in heavier artillery.

But no bios has been known to work...the one out of the box wouldn't recognise all the ram...the next one FB would give me cold boot failure...and now the latest one FC1 also gives me cold boot failure...!

btw...what is the Windows 7 DVD repair console or Repair CD?

I just have the W7 Home Premium install disc....is that what you mean?

Yes on the second screen of booted DVD is Repair console.

Is this cold boot failure similar to the one you had before. How did you get it started then?
Or are you able to start it now?

I would flash to one with which I can boot. We need to see the dump files to figure where your problem is.
STOP 0x000000FC: ATTEMPTED_EXECUTE_OF_NOEXECUTE_MEMORY

Usual causes: Device driver

We need to see your dump files and system information in order to help you.

Please read the tutorials below and up load your files. I suggest you start a new thread in the Cashes and Debugging section

Hey...by the way...I can still actually boot into my PC....just not cold boot into it. If I unplug hd cables and replug in...it will boot and when booted it runs perfectly...it's sharp and responsive and awesome...

Anyway...I'll be home in hmmm....6 damn hours...maybe 8

So I can't do anything til then...but I....will........be back

Before having to create a crashes thread, let me try a few things:

You mentioned that when you unplug, then replug in the HDD SATA cables, it works properly. What happens if you unplug and swap cables around? Same problem (I would expect so)?
If that does nothing, hit whatever key to boot into BIOS. Check the boot order settings. If you have no floppy drive, remove that option. Move CD to 2nd choice after boot HDD. Any effect?

If all those are no, does your MOBO have an IDE port? If so, and you are not using it, disable it. If not, then its not an issue.

Is all of your hardware compatible? Is this a custom build or a prebuilt?

- I haven't tried swapping the cables around yet...or changing cables
- No floppy drive...not sure if I have that disabled. Will check
- Will look into moving CD to 2nd choice after boot
- I think my mobo has an ide port...as my CD drive connects by ide right? I'm pretty sure it does. Yes it does...just checked online
- I'm sure my hardware is compatible...it is custom built...but all the parts were recommended to work together based on research I did.

I just don't understand. It is something to do with cold boot...that cold boot will hang the PC...but once I do actually boot on the PC runs flawlessly. What is snagging that cold boot!??

If I can add to what Lordbob has said:

I would also try disconnecting the optical drive, followed by the 2nd HD.

Yes sure, I will do those things too.

My optical drive is a bit old...couple of years...I considered that it may be a problem.

Also...just before I left for work today I installed the latest video card drivers...I thought maybe that had something to do with it too.

Anyway...

You have received very good trouble shooting advice already.

Have you tried any of them?
Please confirm what steps you have done and specify the ones you have not done.

Cold boot issues can be caused by software, drivers, settings and/or hardware.
This is a difficult problem to troubleshoot, it's similar to an intermittent electrical fault, it may take several tests run repeatedly to find the cause.

If you're having the same or worse issues with the Beta BIOS I would recommend to go back to the last stable BIOS.
Beta BIOS are sometimes not full versions and may add other instability issues to your current problems.

A good place to start is to follow all the steps suggested by Greg in post #2. Also Carl's BSOD log files, he can analyze them while you're testing hardware.

For the Memtest86+ tests I would follow this tutorial:

Be sure to follow the steps in Part 3, this will test the RAM cards and the motherboard slots.
It is possible for all three RAM cards to pass, then when run with one card it can fail. Number of RAM cards assuming 3x2GB.
It is also possible that it will pass several times and then fail.
You should also run memtest86+ under cold boot conditions. Run it from USB memory stick if possible, or from CD, at first startup. This can eliminate the possible settings and/or software probable causes.

There definitely are several possible causes but, have seen this resolved by adjusting RAM settings or running new RAM, by either testing with different RAM cards or RMA'ing the RAM.

Again, suggest you start from Greg's post #2, and Carl's post #10.

Can you download CPUZ and post a snip of the CPU, Mainboard, Memory, and SPD tabs.
This will give us some information on your system and hopefully some clues for us to continue.

For posting the information , enter 'Snipping tool' in the Start button > Search box, hit enter. Select the area you want to post and save to a convenient place.
How to Post a Screenshot in Seven Forums

Have you been checking your temperatures?

Use Speed Fan or Real Temp , run one of these and check the CPU temps when at idle, under load and/or testing.
Let us know the minimum and maximum temps you get.

Let us know the progress.
If you're methodical and let us know the results from each step, this will help us to resolve your issues.

Your welcome, this will likely take a lot of hardware testing to find the solution. Keep good notes and we'll get to the cause.
