Is a 64-bit Windows 7 quicker than 32-bit in itself, as an OS?

I should have added that what the above means is that , with 4GB of memory on 32 bit windows, only 3.3 - 3.5 GB is usable.

In addition, programs running on 32 bit windows are limited to 2GB of memory. This is because windows reserves 4G of virtual memory for the operating system. With 64 bit this is not a limit.

I don;t think there is any upside to using Windows 32 bit. The only reason anyone would is if they have very old legacy software that won't run under 64 bit even under comparability mode, which there are none I know of that would affect an average user. 32 bit programs as a whole run under 64 bit windows just fine.

I've been using 64bit oses since XP x64 was released and never had a single performance issue, then used Vista x64, now 7 x64 and several linux based distros, all 64bit, so i really recommend to move forward and leave 32bit behind.

I still get sluggish 64 bit performance on some older hardware with less than 4gb RAM. But I will try it again to see if some recent change has improved this.

The minimum requirements for Windows 7 are:

1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

So that may explain what you are experiencing: you are running at the bare minimum for 64-bit
