Hi;

I am interested in buying either of these 2 UMPCs. I just wanna know which one is worth buying and if I should just use Vista or 7.

Panasonic Toughbook UMPC U1GQGXG2M GOBI Dual Battery- Touchscreen w/ Win 7 | eBay

or

Sony VAIO VGN-UX380N 4.5-inch Laptop 1GB RAM, 40 GB HD UMPC 27242711730 | eBay

Personally I like the Vaio's design more, though performance is always the winner. I am leaning towards Windows 7 as I want to run modern programs, though I like Vista's nostalgic aurora colors on it's control panel and desktop background.

Which is the better deal? I want a small handheld UMPC running a legacy OS that can do all the modern tasks I need. Other folk's opinions could help me decide.

Thanks. :)

The panasonic has more memory, a faster cpu, a larger hard drive (and a solid state drive at that), a larger screen, Windows 7, and is 40% the asking price of the Sony. 7 also has more support for software than Vista which has already been dropped by many major vendors. The sony is designed for XP and only has a gb of memory. Not a good idea. The panasonic has the bare minimal amount of ram. Those kinds of systems aren't designed for much other than portability. If I had to choose between the 2 I'd go for the panasonic.

Thanks! I just want a small PC that can do normal web browsing, youtube videos, and do everything my brother's laptop does. Portability is honestly the main reason I want one, as long as it can do regular tasks, it is fine. Though I do want to try out Vista, I might upgrade one of the two XPs at my house to Vista if possible.

Being a factory trained tech, on several Panasonic products, I'm partial to the Panasonic Brand.

As for the Sony, I've had lots of problems with that brand over the years, enough that I'd never want to own one.
Vista was a huge Microsoft mistake, and every tech in the world knows it. No big secret. On a Sony, it's got to be just that much worse. :(

So, please, get the Panasonic. It was originally designed to be a Go Anywhere, under all conditions, PC, and still work. (kind of like the Timex watch, that takes a licking and keeps on ticking)

Good Luck and Happy Computing

I agree. Panasonic is the right choice.

I did decide on the Panasonic. I think it might be faster, and be able to run youtube videos and websites than the Sony. Hopefully it can, depending on the hardware. Once Chrome loses support for it, I might decide to upgrade or dual boot it to 8.1, if that is possible.

For the specs and the age the sony seemed insanely high to me. A modern ipad wouldn't cost too much more and would have much better specs. It would probably be the same for a modern android tablet or surface. On the Panasonic every single spec is better and it's less than half the price. That's really a no-brainer.
