My PC is OEM: My motherboard is AsusTek P7P55D-E LX Rev 1.xx with Intel Core i5 760. My thinking up to now was to use the AMD Catalyst center for its driver updates but am wondering if this is something else

Installing AMD Catalyst left to its own devices will install "AMD HDMI Output (AMD High Definition Audio Device)" the problem with this is if left as the default (or one of 2 defaults) there will be no sound whatsoever in Windows sounds or any media player. I must go to my original "Speakers High Definition Audi Device" and select it as default in order to hear sounds again. This tells me that Catalyst is installing the wrong drivers OR installing drivers where there shouldn't be any. or something is happening that I am not aware of. If anyone can shed light on this I would appreciate it--since this would mean that whatever drivers I am using are as old as my computer since AMD is installing the ''wrong'' ones. Thank you

No, it is not installing the wrong drivers. If you look in your audio control panel you will see the option for your regular Audio (on board or separate audio card) and the AMD HDMI Output (AMD High Definition Audio Device) for use with the HDMI output for TV sets and also some monitors. The audio in those cases will be provided by the AMD video card. Think of it as a separate sound card for the HDMI digital out. Sometimes this will apply to the DVI sockets too so you may well see 3 or more AMD sound outputs together with your sound card. You just need to select yor sound card as default and ignore the others until you hook the PC up to a TV or monitor that supports HDMI.

Now that makes sense. Thanks. This brings me back to my original question, in part though. How do I update what I do have which is not that one--and is simply listed as 'Speakers'?

That would be the regular sound card. I would say if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Oh I absolutely agree with the "If it ain't broke don't fix it." idea--and some except for one thing. All works great windows sounds and media players, except for Skype somehow (I hear sounds if I make the call but not if I receive the call), hence maybe broke

What is the model number of your sound card, or if it is on board the model of the motherboard. You can ignore the ATI/AMD Video card audio as the drivers are good for that. I'll look them up for you. :)
