Is Antivirus Software Dead?

Are we headed towards a future where the idea of an antivirus program, or security software in general, is simply not part of the picture? We might well be, but not for a good long time yet.
In the last few years, consumer computing has come under attack like never before, and the attacks are only growing more clever and more concentrated. In response, there need to be changes to the platforms on which we do most of our computing, and new approaches to securing the platforms we already use.

Defensewall HIPS or firewall?

HIPS.
"No AntiVirus can block 100% of viruses"
True, but Defensewall HIPS can.
If Defensewall was able to block absolutely everything than all other Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware would cease to exist

No Single Anti-Virus app blocks everything...the sooner you realize that the sooner you may prevent a future attack

PS I believe Dinesh will be able to also put this myth to rest...he has a knack for exposing Security Software...after all he is the Security Freak

That is nice that it removed all those malware but that is just 100 out of millions of malware out there...

I am serious...there is not one single anti-virus app that removes them all...there just isn't

Not going too far, I tried the test with EICAR test file. I was able to download it using Firefox browser and Defensewall didn't notify me about it.
The eicar test file was successfully downloaded on the desktop. So I opened Defensewall and it said that there is 1 untrusted process running. So I though it has detected the test file and wants me to take an action. But when I clicked to see which untrusted process is running, it showed it as Mozilla Firefox.
As you can see in the above image, the eicar test file is of 68Bytes and its sitting nicely on the desktop.

I am pretty illiterate concerning Security and Viruses but...exactly what is the eicar COM file? Is it a virus or a test virus?

Its just a test file which shows the potential of an anti virus program. It behaves exactly the same like a real virus but its not at all harmful to Windows.

I see...one of these days I need to do some reading into Security and viruses in general...

It would help if I actually got one every now and then...I haven't had a virus since 2004 (I think)...

Well to be honest, I was never interested in security softwares. I had used AVG for 2 yrs, then I switched to Avast(just for a change) and used it for a year.
Once my uncle called me to fix his pc. When I turned on the machine, I was welcomed by Win32.Sality Worm. I used MBAM, Spybot and some other tools to remove it. The next day, uncle calls me and says that its the same problem again. The worm is back, even more in numbers. Then I used Avast and NOD32 to clean it and the system was clean. It was adventurous and fun. I saw processes like TASKMAN.EXE, windows.exe, etc which were nothing but worms.
There I liked NOD32 and started using it. Now using Vipre Antivirus.

Ugh....
This isent how Defensewall HIPS is so post to work...AT ALL.
It uses sandbox and limits programs.
Basically, when you get a virus. Its their, it will run. But will NOT do anything. It is unable to edit and infect your computer.

Basically, if that lititle text file was a real virus that ran, it would run but it wouldent do anything. It would just SIT their. Then you go to Defensewall and end all untrusted processes. NO dll's may be loaded. No Files (Ex: Csrss.exe) can be edited.

Its sorta hard to explain, but its easy-to-use, super amazing protection that blows away every other antivirus is just simply amazing.

If you still dont understand the power of Defensewall, watch theses youtube videos. You'll be surprised at how good it is at protection!

First of all,

The death of AV's has been proclaimed for years (from 2007, 2006, 2002), and there are likely earlier examples. There’s a trend here, and it still seems a premature burial - however on these days AV technology which is signatures based-on blacklist are outdated.
So why ppl still use them? It's simple: they don't know about others security app, or they don't want know about others alternative security application, and the last but not least - strong marketing AV vendors campaigne and habits - for years they use AV so why we need to change it, even if our system was infected "n" number of times.

Yes but you can say: What about super-duper advanced, intelligent (put here other adjectives) heuristic? The truth is - each the AV software has a database of signatures and each signature is a piece of binary code that identifies the virus, so AV's simply check each file for a known signature from database. Read more: http://www.sevenforums.com/305609-post46.html

Second thing - it's about DefenseWall.
DefenseWall is NOT detection software like AV/AS/AM/BB.
DefenseWall is prevention software, works very similar to SRP and LUA/UAC in Windows OS's. You can't expect that after downloaded infected file DW - will inform you "Hey! this file is malicious!" - because DW doesn't have blacklist, BUT in this situation DW will stop malicious code and isolate them from rest of your system.
There is YouTube- DefenseWall Intro Review Part 1 test on YT also mine on YouTube- DefenseWall HIPS vs MS AntiSpyware2009 (worm/adware/rogue) rogue infection - I hope it helps you understand the idea of DW.

Also please note that there are few situations when DW will inform you that smth wrong is happening like eg. access to protected area, attempts modifications secured (by default) area, or when keyloggers/screenloggers are trying to reads your keystrokes/make screen of your desktop, etc, etc. (you can check it by download test keylogger/screenlogger application.)

Personally I use DW, almost one year without resident AV software (I do only once per month/2 months on-demand AV scan to delete inactive and harmless potential malware), indeed it is brilliant application worth to try, but before you install it read carefully the help file to be sure that you understand idea of DW and you know how it works and how to use it properly.

HTH,
Creer
