Is ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series a good/decent graphics card?

What's the latest, most high-rated ATI Radeon graphics card? I finally got ze $ to buy whatever I want.

Many on the forums will persuade you to go with team green (NVIDIA) though if you wish to have better driver support and stability, especially for SLI (dual card) solutions...

I am still using a fanless 1GB HD4850 (because my Supermicro C2SBX board was somehow incompatible with the dual-DVI HD5770 I wanted to upgrade to) and it works perfectly. I used it for watching HDTV on a second 24" LCD monitor in a two-monitor setup, and I am not a gamer.

However the HD4xxx series cards are no longer actively supported by the new AMD drivers. You have to use a "legacy" version they have now created for support of these older cards. This isn't a problem, as the newer drivers are actively developed to support their newer cards, and the HD4xxx cards work perfectly with these "legacy" drivers. I'm still running v12.3 and it's flawless for my needs.

Your subject question asks specifically about the HD4800 series cards as "good/decent" and they certainly are. They are not the high-performance competitors for the new cards that any amount of money will now buy. But they are low-power users, and provide excellent value and performance if your needs are compatible. For me, who is not a gamer, it has been perfect... for several years now.

All motherboards with a PCI-Express x16 slot should support ATI or NVIDIA graphics cards.

They do not discriminate between brands nowadays, except when it comes to SLI or Crossfire solutions (Dual Cards).

Actually they do support them,anyways i would go with a 5xxx or above,4xxx series is getting kind of outdated and losing support.

I have no idea. But in CPU-Z it says I have ATI Radeon 4850 while in CCleaner says 4800...

My HD4850 card (in my desktop machine) shows up as (a) ATI Radeon 4850 in CPU-Z, and (b) ATI HD Radeon 4800 Series in GPU-Z.

GPU-Z is picking up its "title" from Device Manager, apparently. This is also the same value shown in Catalyst Control Center Information for "graphics chipset". I suspect this comes from the driver.

CPU-Z probably is getting its precise hardware information by directly interrogating the card itself.

Doesn't matter. We all know it's an HD4850 card, supported by the Catalyst drivers, and that's really all that counts.
