Is it actually possible to install W7 on HP Envy 15???

Could it be this?

https://drp.su/en/devices/video/amd/amd-radeon-hd-8650g?os=windows-7-x64

If you can find the correct driver on that site, you can d/l the exe and extract the drivers with 7-zip.

For future reference, do yourself a favor and make sure you are installing using Win7 with SP1 (Megahertz' link above). That has the USB3 drivers built into it. I found that one out the hard way, after beating my head against a brick wall for several weeks of trying to install Win7 on my mother's laptop that came with Win8. I finally found my answer in one of the threads here. Installation was a breeze after that (although I had to add SP1 to the install disks myself at that time).

The Win 7 SP1 doesn't have the USB3.X drivers. USB 3.0 came much after SP1 release.
You may be referring to Win 8, 8.1 or 10.

Can't believe this, but when I shut the PC down last night, Windows applied about 5000 updates - this morning, my display drivers are working perfectly  I also ran SP71386.exe, which I found using your hardware ID method. Nothing appeared to happen when I ran it - weird - but I guess maybe that was it... sigh... just the touchpad and Bluetooth to fix now. The HP touchpad driver, SP65086.exe, appears to be corrupt on their ftp site - about half of it downloads, says it's finished, but reports corruption when you try to install it. If anybody knows where I can get these last two drivers, I'll be a happy man...

So close... then Windows installed a Synaptics touchpad update, and the machine has frozen. Rebooting, Safe Mode etc don't help - as soon as the sign on screen appears, it locks. Keyboard, ctrl alt del, nothing responds. Is there anything I can do, other than putting the laptop through the window?y

Sorry guys - it's a long time since I did this kind of work. I managed to get it up and running using the System Restore... I'd forgotten you could get that option at startup.

Thanks Roy - my fault, I deliberately allowed it to install this one - I thought it would be better than the one I had

Not sure what you mean by the W10 key... where is it exactly?

Thanks

Hi Hogweed,

The Key is on MS's server, you dont actually see or need it.

When you first used it your comp MS created a device ID, based on the components in your comp.
(great big 1 line string)
So unless you change the motherboard you can go back to 10 anytime you like.

Roy

Thanks for the explanation - I had a vague idea it was something like that!

Now that you have the Win 7 Pro SP1 iso, download the updates, so if if you decide to start over you will have everything already on your computer MS releases SP2 for Windows 7 - Windows 7 Help Forums

Since M$ began to install tracking features I only install security only updates. (My WU is set to disabled. I run WU manually and decide what to install).
If you want to shield from this features have a look at this small program
Spybot Anti-Beacon for Windows

You can just run it on a currently installed system.

Or you can use a command to point to a wim file image you want to update:

e.g.

C:\UpdatePack7R2-17.9.15.exe /ie11 /WimFile=K:\GRMCULXFRER_EN_DVD\sources\install.wim /Index=3

It takes a while to mount wim image , install 200+ updates, unmount the image,.

So if you want to update all 4 ( or 5 for x86 ) images, there is a workaround. Just update image 1, make several copies and change the editions using dism.

Here is a dism gui to make changing editions simple

Note to self: After spending 3 days getting to this point, don't attempt to restore your W10 backup to your W7 machine, as it thinks you're a different person and creates a different profile etc, and it's all a bit of a mess :o

Well, interestingly, after a couple of days with W7, I’m beginning to suspect it’s a combination of things which were crap, rather than simply W10. The touchpad is SH*TE (are you allowed to swear on this forum, when talking about W10?) on this machine (HP Envy 15), which I chose for all sorts of reasons, such as having an illuminated keyboard (I tend to do emails and things sitting in the dark watching telly).

Howgweed, don't give up on Win 7. It's a much better OS than Win 10.
You've done a great job. The idea of begin installation on the other laptop was brilliant. It's now on my solutions list.
The websites you spend too much time on (eg dating) that are also unresponsive, doesn't have nothing to do with Win 7 or Win 10. Do you have now Internet Explorer 11?
I don't like Internet Explorer (have it as some crap sites use some features that only run with IE) or Chrome. I've been using Firefox for almost 20 years and I'm happy with it.
The fist software law says: "The best software is the one you know how to use".
Did you downloaded Win 7 Pro SP1 with the provided link? Did you see the SP2 from the link?

It could be your browser. A lot of sites cause trouble coz of all the advertizing and tracking crap. Trying a different browser may help.

It could be your browser. A lot of sites cause trouble coz of all the advertizing and tracking crap. Trying a different browser may help.

Brave might be worth a try, or Opera.

Funny, think I was one of the first ever users of Opera, as it was the only one which had a pop-up blocker a million years ago. But I REALLY like Firefox - as you get older (I'm 62), you don't like to change things unless there's a REALLY good reason :(

I also use Adbock, so it's a long time since I last saw an advert :geek:

No, sorry, didn't get around to downloading your image  I should say I'm in the process of a very challenging house renovation at the moment, having moved back to Ireland from England after 35 years, so I'm... errmmm... a little stressed :eek::eek:

I have IE, but I would never use it - (a) because it's Microsoft and they want me to, (b) it doesn't have Adblock, which is one of the most wonderful things in the world.

I did however image my HDD after a installing SP1 and a million updates, using EaseUS ToDo backup thingy, so hopefully would be easy to restore in the future. But if you care to put the ISO up again, I've relaxed a bit now :D
