Running a laptop battery to complete exhaustion, was always the recommended procedure for best performance when the Ni-Cad battery was used for power, as it prevented the battery developing a Memory ( the battery would not use all of it's capacity but sit at part charge).
This is not now needed with the current use of Nickel–metal hydride batteries which can be either regularly charged when part or fully discharged without issues.
So a complete discharge is not an issue for laptops - indeed it could be an advantage for use if you use an older type battery
