It seems to be quicker

Windows Vista Defragmenter
The Vista answers would apply equally to Win 7

I wouldnt say its best for a regular weekly defrag. But if you want to get those files that usually never manage to get defragged because their handle is open then maybe do it once a month.

Hello Davv,

Welcome to Seven Forums.

By default there is a task to run defrag once a week, at least there was here. Just let windows do the job and you shouldn't have any problems. It works in the background so there is no progress window.

If you decide to use another app, be sure to turn this task off as the two programs may conflict with each other.

Defragging in safe mode is slower than in a normal startup. There is a program available for xp that defrags system files, which unfortunately hasn't been updated to work in vista or windows 7, but it would work in a dual boot system if you also have windows xp. check out pagedefrag

Puran Defrag is able to defrag system files at boot time, including MFT.
