Is it normal to check one update box and two updates install ?

Is it normal to check one update box and two updates install ?
Windows update is set at:
"Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" and
"Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important update" is unchecked.

The updates were:
Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB3162593) Marked important.
Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB2310138 (Definition 1.223.2784.0) Marked optional.

I check the box for the Microsoft Security Essentials Definition Update and clicked OK.
It said one optional update selected, install updates.
When clicked install updates it downloaded and installed the two updates.
I only wanted the Microsoft Security Essentials Definition to install.

Is this normal?

That does seem to be fairly normal behaviour. If you don't want to install an update when you are installing other updates you need to Right Click on that update & select Hide. Just unticking the box does not always stop the update & even if it does it will keep reappearing until you actually Hide it.

I'd say the options descriptions are the wrong way round.
MSE definition updates are Very important.

Definition updates are installed any time updates are applied.
note your MSE icon must have been showing RED, and in the GUI >>> you are not fully protected <<< you can update MSE outside of the normal WU proceedure, directly from the GUI.

Not being picky but i think you ticked the wrong box.

Actually torchwood, if you want to install MSE updates manually as the OP mentioned then they have to be ticked. I usually check for updates very soon after I crank up the computer & if I want the latest MSE update I do have to tick it & then go through the usual update procedure.

You are correct with being able to update via the MSE GUI instead.

Silverlight shows up as an optional update for me. Generally it isn't needed except for some websites however if it is installed it needs to be updated.

By default, MSE definition updates should automatically update via the MSE app. Getting the latest MSE definitions via Windows Update is an optional update method... thus, those KB updates are marked as optional.

Hi,
Indeed if Silverlight is marked as Important you already have it installed and this is a security patch or newer version.
When I had MSE I used a method posted by David to not worry about getting updates though the update system and yes they did show up in the Optional section oddly enough which I tend to ignore that section
