Is it OK to mix RAM - so 1 GIG Memory Modules with 2 GIG's?

Looking for some help here! I ordered some RAM modules and my PC has 6 RAM slots. I have 4 x 2GIG Memory Modules coming in the post so is it ok to mix them on the same motherboard? So the total will be like this: 4 x 2GIG Memory Modules 2 x 1GIG Memory Modules So 10 GIG in total - is that cool to mix them? The RAM is all the same type - i.e. 240 Pin DDR3 RAM Thanks guys

As long as they're the same speed too.

You can mix RAM, but they have to be the same type and speed.(You already knew that) Keep your 4x2Gb RAM in the first slots and the 1Gb behind those. For "best" performance I would use RAM from the same manufacturer, this just guarntees that all the modules operate at exactly same spec. But you should be fine so long as they are all the same speed and type.

Technically the sticks don't have to be the same speed. If you mix differing speeds of RAM then they run at the speed of the slowest module.

tommyg speaks the truth. But I find that to be undesirable, its like getting an upgrade and downgrade simultaneously. Then again, depending on what you demand from your system RAM speed may be forever invisible to you as a general user.

1 other thing no one`s mentioned. A lot of boards have different colored ram slots. Keep the same size ram in the same colored slots.

For example, keep the 2 Gig sticks in the blue slots and keep the 1 Gig sticks in the black slots. If you don`t fill the slots correctly you may not get dual cannel, quad channel, etc. The motherboard manual should tell you.

Run Crucial System Scanner software to find out what type of memory is in your computer
to see what it says about your RAM specs and configuration.

Compare that with the factory specs and those given when you google your PC or mobo model + upgrade RAM.

Hum there is a jolly good small forum for memory advice but I don't know if I am allowed to mention it in here. It was very helpful when I built my Ivy B and was stuck for what I should be using .
