Is it possible to have desktop icons for connected devices

I'm wondering if there is a way to show the connected devices as icons on the desktop as is done in OS X. If you aren't sure of what I'm talking about, it's when I plug my phone, external hard drive, DVD, etc into the computer and instead of always going into My Computer to view what's connected, it shows up as an icon on the desktop. Is this possible, or is this just a feature I have to live without unless I cross over to the dark side and use OS X?

Hello xanpolak, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You should be able to right click on the device in the "Computer" window, then click on Create shortcut to have a shortcut created on your desktop for a desktop icon.

Thanks! That is a good solution.

Though, I don't really like that the icons remain on the desktop when the device isn't plugged in. I was hoping for something that automatically makes the icon appear on the desktop when I connect a device. Is that possible?

In that case, I think using the free program Desk Drive would be better for this.

Desk Drive sits as a icon in the system tray monitoring your system. Desk Drive adds a desktop icon pointing to the drive automatically when you pop a USB thumb drive or DVD into your computer instead of you having to open Window's Explorer and find the mapped drive or folder. Remove the media and the shortcut goes away.
