Is it still necessary to install chipset/mobo drivers?

Just wondering this as i thought windows 7 pretty much has everything built in. I have been running 7 since the betas early last year and really have never installed any. However after i reinstalled 7 a couple weeks i have been having major issues, i just got around to reinstalling it again and everything is smooth. Just wondering if i should leave it as be or start installing stuff off the gigabyte site for my board?
thanks

How old is the motherboard and the chipset drivers? What kinds of problems were you having with the previous install?

With the investment MS made in drivers for the Win7 installer and via optional Windows Updates, you really only need to seek other drivers if one is missing or performance dictates.

With your bluescreens, I would have troubleshot it thoroughly in error logs then if still a problem tried the mobo maker's chipset - with the ability to roll it back if there was no improvement.

Since you report no continuing problems, I would wait to see how performance pans out.

**A small inexplicable exception to this is that NVIDIA chipsets may report a missing "CoProcessor" driver which requires the factory or NVidia chipset to remedy. (Maybe someone from MS will see this one day and fix this oversight)

I'm using a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R rev 1.1 board and I haven't used any chipset or mobo drivers. Everything from Windows 7 is working good. The only 3rd party driver that I am using is from Nvidia for my 9800GTX+.

If the board was built for Win7, or if the vendor's site has Win7-specific chipset drivers, I would at least look at the versions of those drivers and compare them with what you have installed now. I would only install their drivers if they were newer than the ones you have.

I do agree with this, I did have to install this driver.
