Is it wise to do this?

My Win 7 64 bit 8GB Core I7 laptop is new, I installed Kaspersky internet security which is running excellently on my Desktop, I realized that the amount of net surfing I'll do on my laptop is minimal and all the sites I'll go to on it are clean therefore I don't need a powerful paid app like Kaspersky.

Is it wise to get a free Antivirus/anti spyware program ( that provides free updates) and rely on Windows built in firewall for the rest of the protection? What security software would you suggest

Yes. I would suggest the good and lightweight MSE: Spyware Protection | Free Spyware Protection | Microsoft Security Essentials

It is actually more wise to not pay for an antivirus when many of the free ones perform just as well as paid for ones. And they do perform just as well. Another good idea would be to install malwarebytes beside it for an extra weekly/monthly scan without any conflict between them whatsoever. All free.

Don't forget to keep updated: Windows, Add-ons, and the browser you use. Do this, and you are protected from more than 85% of all viruses out there.

Some programs contain vulnerabilities, such as MS office. Best to just keep all programs updated as well to further protect against this threat. And as you said, a wise surfer is a safe surfer.

It's not actually 'the best' - but it is definitely adequate. I use it on all my machines.

I looked up Microsoft Security Essentials and it turned out to be a pre-release. Should I wait till the software is oficcially released? malwarebytes with MSE together? Won't they conflict or eat up the system's resources?

Why malwarebytes, if MSE can schedule monthly or weekly scans ? Im not sure if it can scan a specific file or folder tough

it has been in use for a couple of years at least and is NOT pre release.
the pre release is only available to trial before it goes out to the public release. the actual mse you want is different

Malwarebytes and MSE don't scan for the exact same things. They are complementary and do not interfere with each other.

Both applications will scan individual files or folders at your direction.

You might consider the paid version of Malwarebytes--it has a few additional features such as real time protection, scheduled scans, and automatic updates. The paid version is $25 for a lifetime license, but you can usually find a coupon with Google that will knock $5 or $10 off that price.
