Granted that I'm still not going to buy Windows 8 even if the world were to come to a screeching halt, I still can't help but go WTF at this piece of information.

Well I am with you KA but wouldn't put it quite like that - I have had a go with it (8) and look 7 is so easy to use why the fuss?

If it turns out that Windows 8 won't be sold independently (barring OEM copies), that'd set a precedent for future Windows releases not unlike what Apple does today where you can't buy Mac by itself.

Hum KA I have never even used an Apple and that doesn't surprise me though cos I've often wondered how you would get an OS onto one of them things.

Thing is you know it seems to me every time I watch TV (not often) that some politician, journalist, or celebrity is using an Apple yet most of the people I have ever met or know all use a PC. It's almost as if it were an alien takeover of some sort LOL!!

Advertising, photography - pretty much all media people use Apple.

I think it is the same in silicon valley - not too many windows users wandering around there.

for Professional photography -- Photoshop is the MUST HAVE 100% required application -- and using Windows is a much cheaper option (Windows hardware is much cheaper than Apple) --and some pros are finding photography a tough profession with the advent of cheap digital cameras and mobile phones so costs are very important.

Musings:
I must admit I have more familiarity with amateur circles.
Now a guess: I would think this class of user would dominate the Adobe market. Amateurs use CSx, Lightroom etc. I don't think Adobe supply anything that doesn't run under Windows.

Robustness to malware attack has been one argument put forward by Mac users but is this due to the Unix OS or the more limited user base?

UEFI is becoming more common on PCs now which was on Apple before. Pros may not be as price sensitive since they can write them off like their camera gear.

A big problem with Macs is they lock down the hardware. You don't have a problem getting good "grunt" value for money from a PC. But I think a key element is a high quality IPS monitor(s). Dell produce great IPS monitors at a good price.

I accept your observations SIW2 when comes to the PRO market at the moment.

They use mac because they always have.

They learnt how when they were assistants. No sense in trying to learn/change to anything else. That will continue

It would also seem vey odd to everyone else in the business.

Ad agencies use macs too - I have been in them enough times to know.

It is a big deal for Apple to have complete dominance of the creative areas.

I've seen tons of Macs in anything involving creative arts, publishing, etc. Every musician person that I know has a Mac. In fact, even as a Windows and online based application software shop, we have lots of developers turning to Mac's to do their programming. Even our team leader of my department which runs about 70% Linux and 30% Windows and even has a Windows phone is currently using a Mac Book for his day to day machine.
