Is MS telling me LIES on anytime upgrade --weird symptom

Hi all
I decided as I needed Language packs which need W7 Pro or above I decided to go for a Windows Anytime update from W7 Home Premium X-64 to W7 Ultimate X-64.

After about 10mins I got message "Update not successful" but on re-boot a whole load of updates were applied and the logo says W7 Ultimate ???

Did some more W7 updates but everything seems kosher -- can even install Language packs and the VER says W7 Ultimate.

So should I just ignore -- or roll back the update and do a totally fresh install from the DVD which loses some of the OEM drivers.

My gut feel is to leave it as it is --but strange error .

Weird...You sure you didn't actually misread it? If things are working well then I'd say just roll with it for a while, but if you still have a system backup from before the upgrade, keep it around for a while.

It's a good thing you went straight for Ultimate, as the Professional edition still wouldn't have allowed you to use language packs.

I find that "Updates not successful" messages are negligible with no other symptoms because Win7 seems to work them out over time. It may have rejected the Update, not needed it, or it was a false positive error.

If it had said "Upgrade not successful" then that would be different, but you seem to have Ultimate with good performance so I'd let it ride.

This seems to be a common problem with Anytime Upgrade from Windows 7 Home Premium x64 to Ultimate x64.

I have done the upgrade for my friend's laptop and I got the same error and the upgrade did not complete for atleast three to four times. Then went to the shop where we purchased the Anytime upgrade kit. The shop assistant has tried it infront of us and it got upgraded to Ultimate.

Later on with this experience, I have tried upgrading my Home Premium x64 to Ultimate x64 on my laptop. I again got same error. Upon restarting the system, however it got connected to Microsoft website, downloaded some updates and later on completed the transition to Ultimate x64.

Since then my system is showing the Windows 7 as Ultimate with the additional Ultimate features available (Bit locker, Additional Languages support etc.)

So you can ignore the initial error before the upgradation. As long as you have the Ultimate features available to you and the system is working fine, nothing to worry...

It does seem to be more prevalent from HP to Ultimate. I've seen it myself more than once on upgrades from HP to Ultimate, and never from Home Basic or Starter (go figure). If you end up with Ultimate at the end, then the result code the product gave could possibly have been perfectly valid, but since it wasn't a "Success" exit code, it responds that it was unsuccessful (even though, technically, the upgrade itself was). This is the only thing I can think could possibly be happening at this point, because all of the "failures" I've seen have ultimately been successful after a reboot.
