Your dude.
The short answer is no ! The long is it's a i3, running onboard Intel HD graphics and you should be happy if the games run but likely have to suffer frame rate loss and resolution loss.

Laptops are not game machines and there is nothing you can do to make it so. The deign priorities of laptops (low weight, small size, low power consumption, low cost) are in conflict with the high performance requirements of modern games. To be sure there are the so called "gaming" laptops that attempt to reconcile the differences. But they are an expensive compromise that still doesn't perform as well as a good desktop.

Title says it all. Is my Dell lappy good enough for playing such games? It seems to work fine for most games I have. Check my specs in and reply.

There are a lot of games you can run. However, they aren't games like Farcry 3, Crysis 3, Saints Row IV, Call of Duty, Titan Fall, Witcher 2, Max Payne 3 or any game that requires a lot of power to run either.

I've got a laptop with a 1.8 i5 in it and similar specs otherwise and it'll run Skyrim on the lowest settings at 25-30 fps at the max resolution for my screen, which is the same as yours.

It struggles with Saint's Row 2 though.

It depends on the game. You could run Torchlight and Torchlight 2 all day on a laptop like that. You've just got to realize that you're not going to play the latest and greatest out there and you'll be fine. Most indie titles will run fine on something like that, Doom 3 BFG edition will run great, You'll probably be able to run Serious Sam 1 + 2 HD versions on it at around 30fps, but I run the classic ones myself because the framerates are better.

Other games you can run include KotOR 1 + 2, Jade Empire, Minecraft, Terraria, Duke Nukem 3D Megaton Edition, Spelunkey, Rogue Legacy, Trine 1 and 2, Burnout Ultimate Box [at lowest settings], Serious Sam Double D XL, Worms Ultimate Mayhem, Worms Revolution...

So you can play games on it for sure. There's plenty you can run on it, but it's not going to compete with a Tower PC or a console and isn't going to play the newest blockbuster releases.

If gaming on a laptop I recommend either plugging in an Xbox 360 controller or plugging a mouse into it. The trackpad is awful for games and there's not much you'll be able to play with it. You probably knew that, but it's worth mentioning just in case.

I think the OP got discouraged already. His laptop is a basic machine which is OK for office apps, but not more. As was said, for serious gaming you need a husky desktop in the $1000 to $1500 range.

Just to make something clear for the OP, the prime reason your laptop is insufficient is because of the integrated graphics (Intel HD Graphics). Your CPU, which you wrote is an i3, is more than sufficient for playing most games.

I'm not being discouraged. I rarely play modern games that much and usually play older games. Sometimes I do get sluggish performance but that isn't because of my graphics. I tried running Sonic Generations which is quite a modern game but it didn't run because of my graphics or something so I tried updating the graphics driver. I recently updated my graphics but didn't get the chance to check if it will work because I lost the disk somewhere in my house. Sonic Generations ran fine on my Lenovo though. I think I should post the specs of my Lenovo too to see if it is any better than my Dell for gaming.

Your dude.
You can run little games on any computer, but that does not make it a gaming computer. You will be hard pressed to find a decent gaming laptop and if you find one, it will be expensive. Much better to use a desktop and best to build it yourself. Then you can set the priorities.

Around a year and a half ago, i got this laptop(listed in my specs) and it ran everything on atleast medium with the exception of very heavy hitters, Can play fifa14 maxed out apart from AA at solid 60fps on my res, things like tomb raider(newest one) on tweaked high at 35+fps mass effect 3 etc comfortably. cost me a whopping £300 new. I agree, all top end gaming laptops will be dearer than a desktop equivalent.

I do o.k. with my gaming laptop (my only machine btw, see my specs) but as mentioned by almost everyone it COST! I'll be retiring her this year I think, for an even MORE expensive one lol. I travel extensively though and need a laptop for that reason, so if you can afford it and really want to game then a tower would probably be best for you.

Actually, I guess I should build a custom PC for all my needs but I don't think I'd be needing one urgently. Currently, my Lenovo is the best thing I've got. Also, my old pc was partially custom built. I bought a Samsung CRT monitor a keyboard, mouse, webcam separately and the CPU case and all the stuff inside the CPU case already fitted inside. It was pretty good for gaming in the good ol' days.

I just built a mini-ITX build that would be perfect for space concerns, LAN parties and or even portability and it will run with with almost all full towers and is much more power and space efficient. There are tons of options and what ever direction you decided we're here to help if needed.

GTA SA or Vice City maybe, but not GTA IV. GTA IV is older, but it's still a system hog. If it does run, it won't run well enough to be any fun. A laptop like that will barely be able to run Saint's Row 2, much less something like GTA IV.
