Secunia makes sure you have the latest security patches, here's a video for the latest release 3.0.

WinPatrol monitors your system for possible unwanted changes being made to your system and alerts you that something is trying to change or add itself to your startup list, services being installed, etc.

Stuff that might normally go un-noticed like programs that try to add extras or make themselves the default without asking you, lots of other stuff you can monitor too.

Winpatrol will notify you if anything changes on your PC and Secunia is a program to check your whole PC to see if your App are up-to-date.

Hey mate, that is like saying you walk down a dark alley in a shady part of town, but have never been mugged so it is fine. Maybe not today, but there is a higher chance that you get beat bad, more than if you drove home on the freeway. Perfect analogy? nah, but I'm working on it.

Although it can get annoying clicking through the UAC prompts, but that is a good part of it and something that keeps you safe even more so than without.

Basically, you have a balance between ease of use and security. The harder you "lock down" your computer, the less things are easy and you get more of a performance drop. There is noscript blocking and all sorts of stuff that just makes browsing hell. Some people give up and just do without security software o.0

I'm not an advocate for running as admin, and in my case UAC disabled too, but how long is long enough to know that there are probably many more things that contribute to malware than this particular protective mechanism? As I've mentioned it is probably about 13 (oops!) years that I have been running as admin without a single infection. I think common sense is more important and the chances of picking up website infections is low and probably much malware is downloaded and installed by 'dirty' practices such as looking for warez or other illegal material. Perhaps earlier in my computer life I might have downloaded a few apps that were dodgy but I was perhaps lucky and now usually go for buying or researching carefully what I download in the way of free apps. I just prefer to be able to be more free with what I do on my computer and I do take quite some care generally.

:)  :)

If you want to try Secunia PSI, I recommend version 2.0.

http://secunia.com/PSI2Setup.exe

Version 3.0 was just released and it has been dumb down and not well liked by us geeks. PSI tracks security risks and will let you know when a program has a security update available. Version 2.0 gives a lot more information and control to the user.

Looks like there will be an update for 3.0 coming out soon.

I can confirm that a list view will be added in the upcoming version, that will be released in the end of July.

Also, the version information in the right-click > help, will be corrected.

Some users have had some performance issues with PSI 3, which our development team is working on fixing as well.

The coming PSI release will also provide a link to the relevant Secunia Advisory

It seems to be enough (and more than that!) in the antivirus realm, however I would prefer to have only one real time scanning active at a time, and call all others manually, because often antiviruses may conflict between them when a virus is found and both try to remove or quarantine it.

I would add a firewall to this combination, blocking all traffic except that you know you need, even the Windows built-in might be enough. Also remember to always use a standard use account for the normal operation and if you want to use UAC, always put it to the highest level.
