is norton utilities 16 any good for windows 7

I have a dell inspiron 1501 running windows 7 home premium. it has 4 gb of ram installed. had 2 gb when i got it and put in 4gb since i had it laying around. downloaded and installed norton utilities 16 trial and let it run and do all its optimization steps. computer seems much more responsive and faster after it was done. my question is... is it worth buying or now that it has been cleaned out and optimized.... the windows built in maintenance programs are good enough?

You are going to get a lot of answers on this, but my thought is go with free
Avast or Panda
use the free windows firewall and the free Malwarebytes.
Why pay when its all there for free.

The key word in that is "seems". The word itself implies uncertainty. Let alone the placebo effect.

Even if it's stipulated that the PC does in fact perform better now than previously, do you have any reason to think you couldn't do the same thing without buying Norton?

And take into account your own obsessiveness. If you are below average on that scale, maybe you don't even consider Norton. If you are above average, maybe you can't help buying something like Norton because you feel relieved for having done so. You'd worry less because you made the purchase and would be unable to shake the suspicion that you could never accomplish the same thing without spending cash.

the laptop has avast free 2014 and malwarebytes free on it. used the norton utilities program to clean out the "clutter" that i thought may have been slowing the system down. it works like lightning now after using the trial version of norton utilities 16.... not real sure if i want to buy the paid version when it expires now that the machine seems cleaned out, and if the included maintenance programs that windows comes with are sufficiant... i probably wont. i am used to apple laptops but needed a windows machine for storm chasing to run live weather radar programs like gr level 3 and such

Try the free ccleaner to get rid of the garbage.

It will ask you what you want to clean. If you do not know what you should check off, ask us.
Stay away from registry cleaning, with ccleaner or any other software

I scan once a week. It gets many temp files and a lot of other crap. I also do it before a virus scan, makes the scan go much quicker.

Some additional information. Orginally, it was called crap cleaner, but people did not like that so it was changed to ccleaner.
