As I suspected a registry fault was the cause of a continuous loop in Startup Repair, I carried out the Registry Repair described in:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/139576-startup-repair-infinite-loop-recovery.html

Although Windows no longer loops, it now hangs at the startup screen.

The contents of config, regback and the recently created mybackup are as follows:-

config
The files copied from regback and now in the config directory are all dated today’s date.
· DEFAULT, 552,960, SAM 57,344 and SECURITY 24,576 files
(should each be about 262,000 bytes in size
· SOFTWARE file 107,016,192
(should be about 26,000,000 bytes) .
· SYSTEM file 21,495,808
(should be about 9,900,000 bytes).

regback
These were copied to config and are the same files

mybackup
These were previously in config prior to trying to making changes
· DEFAULT, 786,432, SAM 57,344 and SECURITY 24,576 files
These 3 are all dated 6/6/15, which is between the date of initial failure and today
· SOFTWARE file 262,144, dated today’s date .
· SYSTEM file 21,495,808, dated today’s date.

Can anyone give suggestions form a possible solution?
Thanks,

Thanks for the link. I think I've gone through all the steps but am no closer to success. After booting, the laptop currently hangs on a black screen with a cursor arrow (that is controllable by the mouse) on the screen. This is whether or not I use Safe Mode or not. I have also tried RK14 Free from Rescue Kit 14 Free Edition - Overview and although it did allow me to look at the partitions and files that were previously hidden in the faulty laptop, and transfer data to a external hard drive, I am still looking for a solution. I believe that ultimately, the fault will probably be a simple fix, and for this reason I have been slow to taking it to our local computer shop and paying their fees.
Thanks,
Dave
