Solved Is the new driver for NVIDIA 8800 GTS OK now for Win 7 64 ?

Hello,

A while back I was getting BSOD'S and I sent in the file log to the forum. The suggestion was to use the older driver for my Nvidia 8800 GTS card. Currently that is version 9.18.13.422.That seemed to stop the problem.

Now occasionally I am getting a message that says " The windows video driver has stopped responding, but has recovered" ( paraphrasing here)

This occurs at times when I wake the machine up from standby, I might see it once every 2 weeks or so.

Is it safe now to install a newer driver for video card or must I stay with what I have and put up with the message every now and then?

This is the latest update, and I have read that they have had positive results with these new WHQL Drivers.

Actually, no it doesn't mate.


It simply means that the driver has had a hiccup for whatever reason and has restarted.


OP, the best way to find out is to simply try the new driver. Create a restore point first.


Considering the infrequency of the error occurring vs Blue screens, it's up to you. It's hard to tell how new drivers will react, especially with older cards.

I've had positive results with the latest drivers, but my config is entirely different to yours.

Hi Roasterman,

I am not using the machine when I get that message, it only happens when the machine is brought back from a STANDBY mode. therefore there isn't any load on the card at all. I do some graphic intensive things and have never seen that message, at a time when you'd think I'd get one.


That's a possibility I guess but with all the fans on the MB, graphics card, case, PS etc. unless it's dustbound, I doubt if that's really it. But I can easily check it.

There is no NEW driver for the 8800 per say, nvidias 331 driver covers every thing, by that I mean a desktop card 8000, 9000,500,600, 700, etc.

I also had the same problem with a 8800GT and I just removed it and started using the intel graphics. You should do this as your last choice in case something does fix it.
