Is the windows 7 upgrade pricing avaliable for RC users

I know that I have to do a clean install, but microsoft has the upgrade priced at $50 and the full priced at $200. Can a person running the RC use the cheaper upgrade pricing?

Yes, but you need to do some editing of the cversion.ini file and have a RC key. there are several threads here at SF that have explained how. You should do a search for upgrade vs clean.

If so, this is the first I've heard of it. Sure, you can upgrade RC to RTM using cversion.ini edit, but how would the paid upgrade version verify XP/Vista license to proceed?

This would be a lot easier than putting XP or Vista back on in order to upgrade. Can anyone provide a link or confirm it is possible. And how would we know for sure now?

A few days ago we released our Windows 7 upgrade guide with the hopes of answering all your burning questions regarding the inexpensive upgrade editions that so many of us have pre-ordered. One of the questions that we couldn’t answer at the time however, was how Windows 7 would handle the verification process to ensure that you were eligible to update. In Windows XP upgrade editions, you simply needed to insert an older install disk. Vista upped the ante considerably by requiring you to have a previous version installed (no activation required). Windows 7 on the other hand, will now require an activated previous version to be installed and not even the workaround found in the Vista version will be permitted.

Supposedly the upgrades just seek a prior genuine version of Windows (and MS indicated at one point that includes the activated RC).

Such a check would look for (1) Minimum build -- formally XP, but it sounds like 2000 works as well, and (2) genuine status.

Anything other than a Vista build and it makes you fresh install.

The RC can't be re-activated forever if you install to a blank drive in the future, but it should work for now. MS supposedly isn't making people go back and fresh install Vista or XP to use the upgrade discs if they took their chances with the RC.
