is there anyway to know whether your current wired network is public or home without going into control panel or nework and sharing.

Like mouse over the network icon on the taskbar it will show its public or home?

Is there any way to know WITHOUT going to any place that allows you to change setting?

I don't want to click or change any setting by accident

Left click the network icon in the task bar and then left click "Open Network and Sharing Centre" in the little box that appears above the task bar. Not many settings there to be changed, not critical ones anyway. It should say on that screen whether it's a Home Network, Public Network or Work Network.

If you set it up as the wrong thing initially and it says Public Network and you're clearly at home, then click the blue text that says "Public Network" and it should ask you to "Select a location for the 'Router Model' network" note Router model is not the actual text that will be displayed but is the make and model of your router, i.e. Netgear N600.

The network meter desktop gadget from Addgadgets can show home/public.

Windows Desktop Gadgets - Network Meter Gadgets Version 9.6

you don't have to have all the stuff in their screen shot - just configure to what you need. Mine looks like this

network_meter.jpg

quite handy for monitoring downloads, or transfers between pcs on your home network
