Hey guys, I decided to install 64-bit again to see if it will over-heat after downloading all the drivers ATI and AMD has to offer.
SpeedFan reports my computer running at 63C
Is this a good tempture?
My CPU is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core processor @ 2.0ghz.
Im running vista drivers for "ATI radeon 3100"
Ive got the AMD Athlon 64 drivers.

You should go to the cpu mfr site and check on the max temp. 63 C is on the high end of ok, but that sepends on load, and many other factors. Find the safe operating range and you will know

Well after installing the ATI radeon 3100 drivers released a day ago off windows update ill reboot and see how hot it is then.
If it is still hot, ill post back!

Well on boot-up my system got so hot it shut down so I guess NOT.
Im using my old laptop BTW.
Why does 64-bit overheat, but not 32-bit?
I mean I can play COD4 for a hour with 90%+ CPU load on 32-bit without ever going over 45C, but on 64-bit it can reach 70C IDLE!

But at idle, 63 is too high.

It sounds like the 64-bit edition isn't properly throttling back your hardware when it's not under load...thus leaving everything at 100% and warming it all up.

Well, my system hit 200F and my AMD Athlon just about melted - So Im back to 32-bit for now and its running perfectly.
Yes, I went to BIOS but I seen NOTHING to do with the Temperature!!!
I have the latest BIOS, version 1.50 from toshiba.
How do I make it show Temperature anyways?

Im assuming this is a laptop. Have you cleaned out the fan and air channel? Mine lapbrick dropped 22F just from a thorough cleaning

It doesn't seem like this is a dirty fan issue since it's not happening in a 32-bit version of the OS.

Are you certain it's really that hot and not the sensors malfunctioning in 64-bit?

POSSIBLE. But how do you fix that?
Oh yea, the laptop is 3 months old. I dont think theres that much dust...LOL.

It was only $475 so I cant really complain but theirs such a big difference between 32-bit and 64-bit...

If your CPU was really getting that hot....the case of your laptop would certainly be extremely warm to touch. If your laptop shell feels roughly the same when you are running 32-bit and when you are running 64-bit...you probably have a problem with the software or the sensor.

Try a different app, for example CoreTemp or RealTemp and see what your results are.

Yea its a problem with the Sensor.
What difference does CoreTemp or RealTemp Make?
Usally, were the system is booting up into 64-bit and the CPU is 100% due to loading windows the system shuts down because it gets so hot.
The fan, well. It does NOT start until the temp hits 190F. Then it gets really loud, blowing out hot-as-hell air. It stops at 180F.
The "HeatSink" or w/e you call it that blows out warm out without making any noise does NOT work in 64-bit, but in 32-bit you can feel cool air coming out.
