Is this ethical?

Hey all,

Just bought Windows 7 Professional yesterday through the win741 student promotion..

Right now I'm downloading the Windows 7 Enterprise trial from MS and I intend to delete the ei.cfg file and convert it into a Professional edition trial which I will activate when I get my key

First question is simply "Is this possible"
and the next question is "Is this ethical/legal?"

Thanks for the feedback!

Josh

forgot to mention that school starts thursday and I want to have my computer all set up with everything I am going to be using beforehand, which is why I am doing this now. I do not want to reformat or upgrade mid quarter if avoiding this is possible.

Maybe I don't understand, but why don't you just download Pro edition?? Or why don't you just run your Pro until you get your licence. You have at least 90 days.

No and no ... If you have to ask if something is ethical, then it probably isn't.

The enterprise version is meant for corporations wanting to deploy Windows 7 to multiple desktops. I would be very surprised if the ei.config file is even there... Follow Zardocs advice....

where can you download pro edition from MS if you don't have a technet/msdn etc...?

And I am running the Pro RC right now but as I understand it, the activation in the RC is different from the RTM so simply entering the rtm key will not work, and I also would like to get the final code I paid for instead of RC code even if such a thing does work...

I might resort to bittorrent but only if absolutely necessary and verifiable as UNTOUCHED MS code.

Again this raises an ethics question and I am not sure whether or not I want to tread close to the edge of what is ethical or not. I feel better about downloading a trial from MS because the point of a trial anyway is to try something out with the intention of keeping it after purchasing.. Seeing as I have already purchased the product, I don't see much harm in downloading that which I purchased from MS after they made it available, and I see the trial as an opportunity to do so.

Also when I bought Windows 7 from win741.com they made it sound like they would provide the download and license key immediately on which they obviously did not deliver; I knew it was too good to be true.

it'd be nice if MS would consider students a bit more, considering that they might not want to reformat and install windows on their computer in the middle of finals midterms exams deadlines etc...

Asking for Windows 7 download links is against forum policy!!

Lets be careful here... I know you are new, but you need to read the forum rules for your own good.. ;)

Yeah I wouldn't do that anyway; I can see why one wouldn't have a problem with doing so with prerelease software but certainly not the final release...
The only reason I brought that up was because I had already purchased the software...
They finished Windows 7 in July for goodness sake, why cant they release it to the students who can really use it for school?

The confusion is intense. You are downloading a trial version of business (not from technet or msdn). Hence the confusion. You are downloading a beta?

I'm sorry. you lost me here.

I feel for you especially as a student. Unfortunately time line can be an issue for some users but distribution must follow it's course by priority.

It would appear then, based on your criteria, that your best solution is to continue to use the RC (build 7100) until mid-semester break in December. Then you can install the Pro offer (available after October 22) without the pressure of losing data?

Good luck this Semester!

Robert

I think I am going to go back to vista for the time being, mainly because I want there to be a smooth and quick transition after Oct 22.

Has anybody tested the upgrade feature of Windows 7 coming from Vista, and are there any real problems with application compatibility?

My main problem is that I don't want to reinstall any software that I had already set up on Vista... I'm planning on leaving all my software CDs at home and I'm leaving for school tomorrow so whatever I set up would have to be today...

I'd advise bringing your CD's...
What if an app has issues 1/2 way thru the semester...then what do you do ?
