Is this new power cable compatible with my desktop? or will it fry it?

Hello everyone, my desktop is an HP compaq from 2015 and on the power supply it reads "AC input 100-240 V-/4 A,50-60 Hz" then "DC output shall not exceed 240 W"

and on the actual power cord to the power suppy reads "10A 125V"

I bought a new European powercord because I am in europe now, but it reads " 10A 250V"


can I still use it? or will I destroy my desktop if I use it?

There should be a rating plate on the Power supply, PSU, assuming that it is dual voltage (there may be a selector switch or a screw type rotary selector on your desktop PSU, or it may be auto switching) and this should give the rating for both 110 and 250 Volts. I doubt if there will be any issue, the rating on the cable is the safe rating for Max power of the cable and I doubt that any cable with the correct plug for the power supply would not be rated for much higher than the PSU.

the PSU will normally be rated in Watts and to give you an idea a 750w PSU will run 3.00A at 250V but 6.82A at 110v so you are gong the best way

also the normal UK voltage is nearer 240 V than 250v

You had better check your psu supports dual voltage. If not you need a step down transformer.

If the HP Compaq power supply has a sticker "AC input 100-240 V-/4 A,50-60 Hz" it is a PS able to work in Europe.
The new cable should match the PS case in one end and the wall outlet on the other.

The cable itself is pretty much irrelevant for the system operation, as long as the power rating is at least the required one. Since your previous one is 125V, the new one supports up to 250V and the current is the same, it'll be fine.

In practice it means that you've got a far greater safety margin than you need, always a good thing. So yes, use it with no problems.
