i am using clean mem my idle memory is 20 if i leave my comp on for 7 days putting it on sleep when gone and yet each day falls by 1 percent currently at 15 percent

Maybe it's not reporting correctly, or maybe you have virus scans and the like running at first.

It could also be Windows is putting certain applications to sleep on the hard drive, when it sees they are not being used.

yes its normal... if i understand you right. basically, when you first start windows 7 then all services such as indexing and such are started, if you then put the computer to sleep, by default it uses something called "hybrid sleep" which basically backs up your entire ram to the hard drive (like hibernating) in case of power failure.

When you resume from sleep, only the services that windows actually needs are loaded back into the ram, the rest sits on the hard drive until its needed.

For example: a normal boot RAM usage for me once everythings settled down is about 32% (of 3GB of RAM) if i put the computer to sleep and then wake it up again (using hybrid sleep) then it goes down as low as 19% (incluiding AV and such)

why on earth would you want that? Pagefile is stupidly slow compared to the RAM, if Windows needs the extra ram, it will dump to pagefile anyway, take my advice, leave well alone

Wicca, you are concerned about nothing. Windows 7 manages memory far than XP or even Vista. It manages memory far better than any third party program. It will write to the page file when it needs to.

Win 7 is very good about starting services when needed and stopping them when not needed. Perhaps the decrease in RAM usage is because Windows has stopped things that are not being used.

Unused RAM is wasted RAM. Things work much more quickly from RAM than they do from a hard drive. You can force Windows to write to the pagefile; but all you will gain is a slower system. The programmers of Win 7 got memory management right. Win 7 is very good about prioritizing what is needed in RAM and what should be written to the pagefile You and I cannot improve on it. Win 7 is not XP. Just decide that Windows manages memory very well and don't be concerned about it.

The more RAM being used the better. 7 will unload and load things as needed if available RAM becomes a issue.

The largest bottleneck in any system is the traditional mechanical drive. Pagefile works similar to RAM only its reading and writing to the HD rather than the RAM.

This method is extremely slow, and best avoided (which it will on its own) if you have the available RAM for 7 to use.
Even if you have a SSD, while much faster than spinning drives, is still no where near as fast as RAM. So it still holds true.


This is why Superfetch, Pre-Fetch are still viable, be it mechanical or SSD drives, as it keeps things in memory.

Bottom line, let 7 use all the RAM it wants too and do not mess with it. Your system will run better in the long run.
Note ~ Thats not saying disable the PF. it is useful. You just dont want to access it unless you must.



--The RAM decrease your seeing may also simply be put aside into Standby Mode.

Standby: Items loaded into memory but not currently active..
It quite simply means, its in memory but not activly being used. But is ready to be marked as 'In use" status when needed.

In use: is what it says, whats actually being used currently.

Look in resource manager to see. you may find you have X amount in use, x amount in standby and 0 RAM available.
This is a good thing, as it means 7 is actually taking advantage of, and using your memory.

This is the best part of Windows 7. Fill my RAM up, baby! I paid for it, it might as well be used, and I get better performance in with the bargain.
