Is Using both an AV As Well As Dedicated Anti Spyware Overkill?

I know that you can't run two anti malware programs at the same time, but I am aware that some people use both an anti virus which they have on all the time and a dedicated anti spyware product such as spyware doctor, which they run once a week. I do know that anti spyware programs are much better at getting shut of the junk that your PC accumulates while browsing the web, which the av doesn't detect. Are they going to provide an extra level of protection that would be worth paying more for?

Hi BomberAF.
I have used Avast free since forever and never had problems. It has antispyware built in. :)

I really like Malwarebytes and Spywareware blaster. Both are free.

Since MB is a on-demnad scanner, and Spywareblaster just blacklists know bad URLs in your web browser, they do not interfer with your main AV suite.
So they should be perfectly fine with whatever AV you prefer to use.

I use them with Norton 2011 which has AntiSpyware built in, and they work just fine together.

You can try Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware. These are free but they also have paid versions that work WAY better; I have the paid versions myself...the products are cheap and even with the paid version, they do not interfere with the AV. Malwarebytes PRO is like a firewall, it blocks dangerous websites that my AV sometimes misses. This feature is not available with Malwarebytes Free. I truly recommend them both; they're fabulous programs. By the way, I use ESET Smart Security 4.2.71.2 but I also recommend Microsoft Security Essentials and avast!.

I do know about Malware bytes, but I was wondering more about the paid for anti spyware specific products. I do believe that they are much better than general av's for detecting sypware.

I use Kaspersky which i know is one if not the best av on the market although for the power you do have to trade off with performance as it is quite demanding.

The best free combination in my opinion is Malwarebytes and MSE. You got MSE for your real-time scan protection, and run Malwarebytes at least once a week as a second line of defense just in case anything gets past MSE.
