ISPs Blocked Ports

I recently switched service to CableOne. I went from 12 Mbps to 50 Mbps. However, my internet experience does not reflect this fact. This morning, my wife commented that, overall, the web is very much slower with CableOne.

On CableOne's web site they state:
"Cable ONE blocks ports 135, 136, 137, 138, 139 & 448. In addition, SMTP Port 25 is restricted for residential customers."

Would this have any effect on speed?

Downloads are significantly faster but browsing is very slow. If this continues, I'll go back to the slower 12 Mbps to get faster.

I don't think that blocking these ports should impact your browsing speed on any way.

Use speediest. Com to verify your speeds.

Try this: Speedtest to get your upload and download speeds.

My cable co (and, I'm sure, that of everyone here) will make speed claims that are unable to be matched in real life situations. With a 50M connection, I'd be happy with download numbers from Speedtest in reach of 35000 kbps.

I'd suggest changing your DNS server to one of OpenDNS's addresses, or one of the several that are suggested around here. (8.8.8.8 springs to mind). I do that at the router level, and let DHCP do it's thing.

I'd like to see your ipconfig /all results, as well.

None of those ports will effect normal operation. If downloads are fast but browsing is slow that would tend to indicate a DNS problem. Your ISPs DNS server may be slow or overworked. Changing your DNS server as suggested is worth a try.

I've run speedtest.net a number of times both from my computer and my wife's. In all cases we get within the 50Mbps speeds either plus 2 or minus 2 and it's very consistent. Where we lose it is in browsing.

Can you please explain changing the DNS issue and how to go about doing that?

Find fine good quick dns server. Try Google or open dns.


Try shooting random pings at the dns server to see is response time.

I think the syntax is like

Ping 8.8.8.8 - n 30
See how long it takes for a round trip.

Try this for the current dns server and also the google and open dns servers.

Judging from the Default Gateway, you're using either a D-Link or NetGear router. I don't have one of those, so I'm unfamiliar with the inner workings of their specific webpages, but in the web interface should be an area where you can specify DNS servers.

Min 47, Max 64, Avg 50ms

I tried a few others as listed on a google search. My current DNS comes up the fastest. BTW, according to the modem the DNS is DDNS if that makes a difference. I tried Renewing the Lease a few times but it always comes up with the same address. It did make the browser appear to load faster. But that could just be wishful thinking.

According to your system, your DNS servers are: 24.116.0.53 and 24.116.2.50. I'm looking to find your router's config so that they may change your default DNS. That way, the next time your computer sends a DHCP request, it will receive a new response from the router, one that will include the new DNS setting.
