The U.S. Federal Communications Commission should avoid adopting strict net neutrality rules that would limit broadband providers' flexibly to "address" illegal online file sharing, the Recording Industry Association of America said in comments filed with the FCC on Thursday.
Internet service providers should have authority to block subscribers from sharing music and other files without permission of the copyright owner, the RIAA said. "ISPs are in a unique position to limit online theft," the RIAA said in its comments. "They control the facilities over which infringement takes place and are singularly positioned to address it at the source. Without ISP participation, it is extremely difficult to develop an effective prevention approach."

this puts to much strain on the ISP's not only would it be inverse to customer satisfaction but it would drive up the cost of internet. when the government want to provide a tax paid internet service they can do it on there.

"They came for the Communists,
and I didn't object - For I wasn't a Communist;
They came for the Socialists,
and I didn't object - For I wasn't a Socialist;
They came for the labor leaders,
and I didn't object - For I wasn't a labor leader;
They came for the Jews,
and I didn't object - For I wasn't a Jew;
Then they came for me -
And there was no one left to object."

I think we'd better start objecting now.... before it's too late.

I think that the RIAA doesn't know about VPNs...

Anyway, I'm against the RIAA all the way even if I don't live in the US. Net Neutrality FTW. The easiest way to correct this problem is to tax the internet subscription.

i understand the the RIAA working to get the artist paid, except thats not what really happens instead the money goes into more lawsuits. that and i think $150000 fine per song maximum is steep by any standard. make the fine reasonable, and pay the artist. as it stands all the RIAA does right now is help some lawyers pad their pockets.

Lawyers aren't the only ones padding their pockets, there are government bureaus that have created entire departments dedicated to enforcing the DMCA. Anytime a law becomes profitable to enforce... be afraid.

RIAA tells FCC: ISPs need to be copyright cops

What a load of B/S.

Can you sue Ford if you kill someone by driving dangerously -- or I'm sure plenty of other examples.

What about Vodafone or any other Mobile phone company -- can the directors be jailed because some Mafia types used "Pay as you Go" mobile phones for pursuing criminal activities.

If you blame the provider You'll never GET any new service whatever -- we'd be back in the stone age before you could say "XXXXX".

A Crime is committed by the Perpetrator --NOT the Service provider or "the facilitator".

Could Los Angeles City Council be blamed for example if after a Bank Robbery the criminals used "City Street" to make their getaway.

You could even argue that the robbery was only possible BECAUSE the city street WAS there in the first place - so in fact "The City of Los Angeles" as the "facilitator" was responsible and should compensate the Bank. - What a Lawyers fest we'd have here.

The whole Law would be turned into an absolute nonsense.

In any case there's always a Zillion and One ways round the problem on the Internet.

With the amount of money (or lack of it) the F.B.I pays --they won't attract the best people in this type of business.

Even using something as simple as a Proxy will by-pass 99% of these typical "Government Logging" programs.

So my verdict on this is PURE BOVINE SCATOLOGY.

Cheers
jimbo

Nothing to do with the topic at hand but i wanted to post this also-

When they laid-off the steel workers, we did nothing because we were not steel workers.
When they laid-off auto workers, we did nothing because we were not auto workers.
When they laid-off the computer techs, and sent their jobs away, we did nothing because we were not computer techs.
And when they laid you off, you did nothing but blame the unemployed.

It came from a tech site i was looking at and forgot. If i remember i will make sure to post it. It was a fun site.
