Issue with HD 6850

So I have windows 7 64 bit home premium and I just got a new graphics card 2 days ago (Radeon HD 6850) and since then the device driver has "stopped responding" 4 times now while playing the game "world of warcraft" and twice it caused my system to shut down. Any idea whats causing this and how to fix it?

what is the psu wattage plus did you oc the card and do you have ram sticks that match each other or is the ram your using the same all around ?

Using 850W pro corsair power supply if that is what you are asking.

test your card with one stick of ram at a time to see if it runs could be ram related

I dont know if this is relevant in any way but the drive just stopped respoinding and recovered while browsing the web (no other programs open).

Also I have never played with my computer parts I dont want to damage or wreck my ram in any way.. I have had the tech guy to work on my computer I would not even know what to look for.

Is there anything else I could try or is the ram thing the only option? How do I remove the ram and what am I looking for after I do remove it?

My advice is to take it to someone who can check it out and fix it for you.
If you don't know what you are doing or looking for you could raise havoc with your computer.
Don't feel bad because we have been there. Just giving you some common sense advice.

Well how could the ram be the problem here? I have been browsing the web a bit and several people have posted threads about the possibility of the new Catalyst Control Center + Flash might be the cause of this as they have reported the same issue but with different graphics cards?

Here is some error reports from my event logs:

I mean I can take it up there again its just 20 min trips each way and these "stopped responding" messages are rather random I had been playing for several hours off and on today for 5-6 hours without a problem and then all of a sudden within an hour period it stopped responding 3 times.


The guy who I ordered it from says he knows someone with the exact same issue I am having but with the 5770 and doesn't know what the problem is so I dont know how much help he would be in the first place.

yeah but you can't always blame the card I still have m hd5770 and i had no real hassels with it

I forgot to mention earlier I had a different graphics card for over 2 months with this exact same set-up and I never had any problems at all the only thing I swapped out 2 days ago was the graphics card and my power supply.

well did you do a full driver uninstall if not that may be where the problem is

i agree to this.....you have to uninstall the drivers, restart in safe mode run driver sweeper, removes all the bits of you old graphic card and then resinstall the latest drivers. if this does not resolve it, then i would suggest to remove the RAM and run the PC on single channel (one DIMM only). At last if all this does not resolve, try to install windows again..............i have 5670 1 GB and had same issue, i did all mentioned above and now i am a happy gamer.

Same Issue..

i Have the same issue with a HD 6850 OC from XfX.. the drivers stop working. and recovers short after. this is a completely new build, have tried all drivers.
i have triyed both win 7 64 /32 and Vista 32/64,, all with same issue my psu is a 600W from OCZ

use the drivers from the ati site dont let windows up date them

I have tried from both the vendor, and amd/ati, noting works.
