I don't trust Windows firewall so I have installed Zone Alarm. If you have a Internet security package it comes with a firewall.

To date, I have Windows 7 Pro 32, Windows 7 Pro 64, Windows 8.1/Pro/64, Windows 10/Pro/32. Windows 10/Pro/64, and yes....Linux Mint, all on separate hard drives.

Some are inside my Mid Tower case, and some are not.

I just plug in, to the motherboard, the one I want to work with at the moment.
W-7 will remain my daily driver for many years to come.

OH, and I also have Windows XP, on a little Acer One Netbook. It runs GRRRRRRREAT!

So, I guess you could say, that when it comes to OS's, I'm covered. Eh?

You've been a lot of Help to a lot of people on this forum.....We'll miss you.

I have a similar setup except that rather than use physical Operating systems I rely on Virtual machines, OK I have mine on a Windows 10 Pro Host, [my Daily Driver], as this comes with Hyper V built in, and is still actively supported, but it's a simple thing to load up an OS for testing purposes, I also have the advantage of having the ability of matching the Virtual Machine to close to the physical machine setup used by the client

Sorry to see you go. I don't think we've ever crossed paths, but always sorry to lose someone.


I'll be staying on Win7 for now. Not in any rush to go anywhere. Just have to get a replacement for MSSE now.

Actually, YES! Since the day I put this PC together, years ago (I don't remember the date now) both side panels have been hidden under my computer desk. Things stay much cooler inside, and I keep a SATA data cable and power cable handy, to pull out when I need them, to hook up another drive.

If I were a casual user, that would probably NOT be the case, but I'm a Computer Tech, enthusiast and hobbyist. So I need access to my motherboard on almost a daily basis.

I have some interesting pic's of me using extra HD's externally, with a 5" fan to keep them cool. But, this forum software will not let me post such pic's on the forum.

I guess I can put in a pic, as an attachment. See below.

The paperclip will allow the insertion of various image formats into the post, either uploading from your PC or from an Internet URL, we do assign limits to image size to keep space usage on the server down but not the number of images (within Reason)

That's OK, I can picture it. On 2 of my computers, I cut a small hole in the case, with a power connection and SATA extension sticking out. Unconventional but it works.

In case anyone is interested, the free update to 10 from 7 still works. I just updated my girlfriend's HP laptop running Win 7 Pro this morning, and it (mercifully) went very smoothly - and, it was activated! I wonder if MS is ever going to crack down on free updates. Anyway, it's done.

I wonder what distro she settled on. I've used Mint, Lubuntu and Puppy, all good and excellent Windows replacements. Yes, GMail worked perfectly on all 3 contrary to another post on here. I get why she wants to leave the MS world..There's only 2 thing that are keeping me from fully migrating to Linux:

1) Lack of game support. Linux users just aren't gamers.
2) LibreOffice Calc's limited support for Visual Basic scripts (I am sent a lot of Excel spreadsheets and the embedded scripts don't work).

When you say GMail, are you talking about Web Mail? Certainly not Outlook Express, or even Windows Mail.


AS a computer tech, I've tried many of the Unix/Linux OS's and found every one of them truly lacking, for an old time Microsoft user.


Even back in MS-DOS days, there were alternatives, but every one of them totally 'wet the bed' in compatibility with programs written for MS DOS.


So I stayed with MS-DOS and became proficient with it. And today you won't find even a mention of those in the History of Computers books.


I've stayed with Windows 7 as long as I could, while I could still get Win-7 drivers for my hardware.
When I could no longer do that, on my main PC, I upgraded to Windows 8.1/Pro/64.
And with the Classic Shell installed, it works just like Win-7 for me and my programs.


Win 10 however, was a bust, because it would not run several of my older programs, that I still want to use.

...but it is time for me to say goodbye to all my cyber friends here and Seven Forums. With Win 7 reaching EOL in a week and me defecting from the entire Windows platform in favor of Linux, although I'm grateful that the PTBs (Powers That Be) have let me get away with it so far.
(most of you all have been totally wonderful) or Seven Forums. most) of us have moved on to (shudder) Win 10. Even if MS had a change of heart and announced that it will stop the current practices I, and many others of us, find so unacceptable (polite term), I can no longer trust MS. Period.
I'm going to miss it and you all..

thank you very much for yours above so politely scribed, which i have "reduced here" to what matters most to me as well. I to keep my sanity, had to leave internet culture completely when i realized much of it was
1. so perversely invasive of a persons divinity that it could only be described as a tool to barbarianize/infantize and strip a person of their most valuable philosophical possession, a divine respect for the care and treatment of others, whether you like that person or not, sneaking into a persons private life with out their knowing or assuming the superiority to do so, is the death of any and all persons tie to the human race and as a civilized human.
2. Feeding mental illness everywhere. MS, many of the "Printer Company's" and others too many to name could really be categorized as having gained the world of understanding somewhat of a broken product falsified as a user friendly end product that should have never even hit the market place,
But -
Have lost their own Souls and become more primitive.
The first casualty of this click left or right regimentation was poetry, feminine Art and sentimentality,
