Hi All. I've just finally abandoned Windows Xp and am completely new to Windows 7. As it is, I see a few issues that are irritating to me but right this second all of my fonts appear italicized.

This computer has only been out of the box for about 2 hours so it has to be an issue with the OS I would think. I went to another forum and the first thing they said was to reinstall the system and I was like....what? I just bought this thing. Are you nuts?

Anyhow. Is this something i can find here on this board?

I'm also not seeing anything pinned to my start menu or recently used progeams in the start menu either although they are set to store and display.

Help appreciated.

Btw, i went to do a spell check for this post and got a window asking me if i wanted to download ieSpell. Guess this very expensive machine isn't equipped to spell out of the box? :(

A bit more information would be helpful, like are you talking about fonts used in the text under desktop shortcuts? In title bars? Where?

But you certainly can alter the fonts used for desktop objects, where text is relevant.

Control Panel -> Appearance and personalization -> click on "change window glass colors" under Personalization -> click on "Advanced appearance settings".

This will get you to the old fashioned Windows Color and Appearance dialog, much like what was in WinXP.

You can select colors and fonts (where relevant) for the various desktop objects, if you don't care for the Win7 default, which is usually Segoe UI.

In the Item list, click the part of Windows that you want to change the font for. For example, if you want to change the menu font, click Menu in the list. Then, make any of the following changes:
    • In the Font list, click the font that you want to use.
    • In the Size list, click the font size that you want.
    • In the Color list, click the font color that you want.
  1. Repeat these steps for each item that you want to make changes to, click OK, and then click OK again.
    Note
    • For some items, the color can't be changed, and some items can't be changed at all. In those cases, the options won't be available.

Also, if you want to set the font size to be what used to be "large (120DPI)" in WinXP, that is considered "medium (125%)" in Win7. Right-click on the desktop, select personalize at the bottom of the popup menu, select Display at the lower left, and you'll get the font size dialog.

Default size is "smaller (100%)" which is like the "normal (96DPI)" in WinXP.

I don't know how you got italics by default.

When you type in this forum, if the dictionary detects a misspelling it will under line that word and if you right click on the word, options will open in a drop down window. It's a very good auto spell check IMHO

Apparently, Windows 7 does not come with Arial and verdana standard fonts. As i scribbled previously, this machine was fresh out of the box.

In order to conform to the fascism of it all to avoid licensing issues I had to buy the fonts and install them which is rediculous if you ask me.

After all, these are very widely used fonts for web pages and programs.

I certainly cannot do what i have to do on my website without them.

If one has the 3rd party dictionary installed. Right? No thanks. Gonna have to deal with my misspellings because I'm not much on 3rd party software that really should be included in the OS. Of course, if they don't include the most widely used fonts on the planet then it's to be expected, I guess.

Not knocking the spell checker used on this board but it's the principle of the matter. Every other forum i post to doesn't require a 3rd part application to do this.

You can download just about any font that you want from the internet, and Windows 7 can use it.

Unless you are one of those addicted to IE, the best solution would be to install a browser that has a spell checker included i.e. Opera, etc.

The onus for spell checking falls onto the browser, not the OS.

Despite the mind boggling decision to still not include a built in spell checker for IE, ieSpell is a safe and decent add-on for IE, regardless of it's 3rd party status.

Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Fonts

Yep. They are included by default.

Italicized and missing fonts are usually the result of un-installing an application that deletes certain fonts.

Think it may have been the Geek Squad that was supposed to have removed everything except the operrting system before I picked it up from them after purchasing the thing.

I've had to come behind these "pros" before. might be the case again. When i asked how he removed Norton he said he just ran the uninstaller. So there you go. He said he never knew of a norton removal tool.

Sigh. the stuff i get myself into.
Is there a list of fonts that come with windows 7 on the web anywhere that folks know of? I'll have to go through the whole fonts folder i guess. SFC turned up no issues.

It's not an official list of fonts, but it should be a good starting point.

Windows 7 font list

The default font for Seven is Segoe UI and if you haven't changed it, chances are that's missing as well.

In the interim, attached are the Arial, Segoe UI and Veranda fonts from my freshly installed OS.

Those fonts were all missing and I only needeed to unzip and install so the latter was not necessary. I had actually just got done going through that very same list before i checked back here on my issue.

Just read thrugh this thread and to me the answer to the OP's problems is very clear in this statement:
Think it may have been the Geek Squad that was supposed to have removed everything except the operrting system before I picked it up from them after purchasing the thing.
Why let someone else tinker with your new PC. If you wanted to get rid of the dross that comes with a preloaded PC then a straightforward re-install of the OS is the way to go. A little research before purchasing would have been time well spent. Easy to say with hindsight though!
