Seriously I might expect this with Windows 98 but 12 years later and I still can't plug in a new Samsung SyncMaster 226BW and have Windows set the correct resolution. The correct resolution isn't even available to set manually!
Drivers from the Samsung website are no help. Graphics card is completely up to date.
I cannot help but think this is a Samsung driver issue. I have a dual LG display but had to install the driver for each for Windows to permit their respective resolutions. Another, less likely source could be ATi's CCC if you are running same.

That should do the trick. I just gave my wife my old 226BW, and, thanks to your reminder, just now installed this driver.
Although, I'm not sure why you had problems in the first place. Never had an issue getting this monitor recognized, or having it set to the right res right off the bat... samsung driver or microsoft.

Nope - this is Windows 7 - marking the death of "Plug-It-In-And-It-Works" enjoyed by XP users.
So much for the 'Increased Compatability' touted by MS - you should see the pile of hardware I've got, which doesn't Plug-And-Play any more!
I don't chuck good stuff out though - Like my old 19" Sony Multiscan 420GS. Still picture-perfect as the day I bought it.

There's not much about PC's I'm unfamiliar with. I'm just here to find solutions to the problems Win7 presents. Not because I'm dumb or clueless.
I see EDID problem... I have Dell 2407WFP, BenQ V2400W, and Philips 150v3, all of them when I plug them, will auto configure and set the optimal resolution automatically. Check the monitor's OSD for EDID option.
