iTunes Music Library.....

Hi.
After doing a clean install of 7 on a friends lappy, I'm currently in the process of updating iTunes, as in I've scanned the music folder, and waiting for it to finish converting another 1500 files.

I don't use iTunes at all, so haven't got a clue about it, and what I was wanting to find out was, why it's duplicating what seems like the entire library, in to another folder within my existing default music folder?

Were the files you transferred in WMA format, if so then it is converting them to the iTunes format (Apple's AFFF). iTunes will play MP3 format, but not WMA it converts WMAs.

Hi FZ21Z,
Sounds like it's converting your .wma files and creating copies of the imported files. It's necessary for iTunes to recognise the imported files. For other files that don't need conversion I'd recommend adjusting the following settings:
Open iTunes, click edit - preferences - advanced
Change the default music location to wherever you' prefer to store your music directory. I also prefer to uncheck Keep iTunes Media Folder organised and Copy Files to iTunes Media Folder when adding to library. This ensures that when I add compilation albums etc, they stay in the same folder, and that I can manually control adding files/folders without creating copies of the same music on my hard drive

Orpheous has it right. The default installation will copy all of your mp3s into the "I-tunes" library, which gives I-tunes some control over your mp3 collection that you might not want it to have.

I always uncheck that option in the configuration so I retain control over what is happening. I'm not sure, but you might need the "I-tunes library" if you use I-tunes with an Ipod--I don't own one.

Sorry, but iTunes does not convert MP3s, it does; however convert WMAs. All Apple products will play MP3s without converting.

Can I assume you are not referring to my post?

I don't use I-Tunes to convert anything. I use it purely to play mp3s on a PC. I don't have any WMA files and I don't allow it to copy anything to its library.

Thanks for the responses, but I gave up this morning, and told her she'll have to go through and organise her library properly, as she already has duplicates, which have been duplicated again, so now a 20gb folder is 30gb.

I can safely say, I won't be getting an iPod any time soon if that's what it does to my music folder.

Lol... at least that way your problem is solved anyway
If all of the files including multiple copies are in her library, you can click file - show duplicates and delete the ones she doesn't want. As they may have been converted, be sure to keep the .mp3 files or iTunes will need to convert them all again.
