I've heard all Windows 8 is, is Windows 7 with a layer on top of it???

M$ already has had to backpedal on an added restriction that was on Office 2013. Before they gave into public outcry, Office 2013 couldn't even be moved from one machine to another.

This is the most annoying thing possible for me, I'm a kid and I don't like going to my parents for everything and I go back to back from a laptop and a desktop. I might just stick with my copy of 2003

Windows 8 is an OS designed for tablets - not suitable for traditional PCs without a touchscreen.

Or even with a touch screen, especially if one has my shoulders.

Yeah right - it is an orthopedic nightmare unless you have one of those convertible Ultrabooks that you can lie flat on the table.

A conventional laptop or net book wouldn't be bad. It's the long high reach to a desktop monitor and the increased distance of the swipes that would make a touch screen murder.

I may get arguments for saying this, and you should really post in our sister forum (eightforums.com) for Win8-specific questions, but I ran into the same question but with Norton AV, and for now, an using the default MS AV in Win8, and have not had any problems.

I can "migrate" Norton AV from Win7 to Win8, but I still use Win7 and would rather not leave it unprotected. I also don't want to buy another Norton AV subscription right now.

So, what I would do (if I were you) would post a question in the Win8 forums regarding what folks feel about using the default MS AV product versus installing a third-party product.

Yes I should Mark but as the 7 was already on with KISS then sorta thought here would be as well but will do.
But if it means complicating things by having another AV on board then I shall rethink my options perhaps even put a totally separate drive in the machine and have 8 on it alone I suppose for the sake of just changing the hardware over probably the best thing I can do.

I've been using Window 8 for about 6 months and I don't think I've seen the metro interface since the day I installed the system, after adding a start button and setting the program defaults to use the desktop version of programs, I'm left with a nice updated version of Windows 7.

This is the best way to use windows on desktop pc.. I upgraded my main desktop pc and laptop to windows 8. put startisback (tried start8 too but I find startisback better than start 8) set boot to desktop disabled hot corners set desktop software as default to open my files and I'm quite happy with windows 8.. but I still don't get why it is so hard to have option built in. why there is need to install 3rd party software.

things I like about windows 8:
It is a bit faster (tiny bit on SSD) but sometimes I can feel windows is bit snappier. boots faster.
I actually like ribbon UI in windows explorer. file copy/move operation UI is better (you can pause file copy, see real time speed graph). task manager is improved too..

I've come around to Windows 8. It has some performance benefits over 7. Boots faster, reconnects to networks faster, reconnects to wireless a lot faster, can natively mount ISO files, has Hyper-V built it, more useful task manager, and has event tracking within Device Manager...just to name a few.

I'm not into the new UI, so I ran Stardock Start8 and boot straight to the desktop. I have none of the new "apps" set as default apps. So, it really looks like my Windows 8 box really is a Windows 7 host. It works for me.

I've done the exact same.

Bought a Start8 license, put Windows 8 on and I'm loving it. None of the Windows 8 UI is in my face, and I can enjoy all the added benefits. I love the new UI on it. For me, looking at Windows 7 now is starting to look a bit dated.

Windows 7 is the BASIS but W8 is much more than just W7 with a different interface -- just like XP and Windows 7 themselves were based on NT but obviously with a lot of changes such as "Plug 'n play" devices.

W8 has a decent Built in Security system, loads of improvements in the kernel especially for performance where the Pre-Fetch algorithms have been beefed up no end, has a Native "Virtual .ISO" mounting system (no more third party apps needed after you've created an ISO on HDD either by "Cloning" a DVD , burning an ISO image to HDD disk or by downloading an ISO file, has a semi decent Backup system, decent encryption (Bit locker if you need it), file history system and quite a load more.

OK the Interface causes a lot of anguish but under the hood W8 is quite a polished OS.

Okay, maybe the wrong forum.. But I don't have Win8, so it's just one question.
Anyhow, I'm completely baffled as to how Windows 8 works under the hood. Every single app in Metro isn't even in the program files folder. This leads me to believe that the desktop is just windows 7, Metro is a whole different OS, and the two work harmoniously together. Is this about right?

Thats right it's two OSs in one, but rigged so that by default the main OS is Metro. Using Start8 or other start menu installers, you can change it so that it boots to the desktop.

Come on over to the Windows 8 Forums, we can help you with anything you wanna know about it. I love it, the desktop at least, it's much mroe responsive than 7. I highly encourage people to at least try it.

It is very similar to 7 but the Transparency is missing along with the start menu, also the networking area has been stripped down, removing the graphics that show how your Network is connected, and you can no longer Map your Network, something which I found useful - It's no longer there. But other than that, it's very similar to 7.
