Hi there,

I have just increased the memory on my Packard bell istart 2479 and since doing so, I have no sound. The Speaker symbol in the bottom corner has a red x on it and it says No Audio output device is installed. This is really starting to frustrate me now because I cant seem to fix it. Please Help

HI there Layback Bear

I have followed your link and now updated my system specs for you to look at. When I purchased my computer back in 2006ish, it came with windows vista and as you can imagine, I had no end of trouble but due to me not using the PC regular I lived with that system. One of the IT guys at my company recently rebuilt my PC and put on windows 7 but said I only had 1g of RAM and to purchase more. He did a check for me and my computer could only hold 4g of RAM so I went and brought 2x 2G and installed this week. the performance of the computer itself has been massively improved so I happy with the changes that have been made except.......... the sound now doesn't work

Hi Layback bear

Yes I have an external sound system and all I know is that its got creative written on the front of the speaker. Even when I unplug the speakers, no sound come out from the computer and monitor itself. This sound issue has only come about since I changed the RAM and not the operating system. I brought the New RAM and installed one at first and left one of the original RAM circuit boards in the PC and the sound was still working but since I added the other circuit board, the sound has stopped. Although I now have 4g installed on the PC, I've noticed that my system says its only using 2.9g, does that matter?

Can you please post a screenshot of "Playback Devices".

Right-click on the speaker icon in the System Tray (which you say has a red "x" on it), and select "Playback Devices" from the popup menu. Then take a screenshot of that Playback Devices window and post it here.

If you don't know how to take and post a screenshot, please follow the instructions in this tutorial.

Hi Layback bear.

I've taken a screen shot an uploaded as request.

I have also ran the windows genuine file but don't feel comfortable with uploading the report because it has a lot of info I don't understand(if you get what I mean).

The RAM I brought was 2 x Packard Bell istart 2479, 2GB 240-pin DDR2 PC2-5300 667MHz

I read on another site that someone upgraded their RAM and seemed to have the exact same problem as I have. They were recommended to up REV their bios system which seemed to fix the problem??

If that was the solution, I wouldn't even know where to get started because I'm a bit of a computer novice :-)

Well, this shows your system believes there is no driver-enabled audio hardware at all present on your system. It's possible your old computer has finally taken a serious turn for the worst and your sound card/chip has died, but let's soldier on for a while.

Perhaps there is some "other" device shown by Device Manager, which could be the now missing sound card/chip. Or, maybe it's in "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" with a yellow exclamation mark.

So, can you look in Device Manager and see if there's anything suspicious? Please post another screenshot if you see something in either of these two categories that looks interesting. I'm interested in either "other devices" (which probably will have yellow exclamation marks) or whatever at all is shown when you expand "Sound".

Thanks.

Bingo, here's a spec page:

msi ms-7301 (cuba) mainboard specs

That motherboard is max 2 gigs, you want 2 1 gig sticks instead.

I had a feeling..... I ran into this myself, previously VISTA gave it away, 2 gig max was common, 32-bit OS's can't handle more than 4 gigs EVER anyway, 32-bit is limited to it. (lots of pointless arguing about the limit really being 3.5 gigs, but that's not an amount you can buy, so anything over if the motherboard could handle 4, would just be wasted, anyway)

OP either remove 1 2gig stick and suffer with mono-channel or get 2 1gig sticks.

In this case it's a motherboard limitation, that trumps the OS/RAM amount.

HI Layback Bear

Sorry for taking so lone to respond, My computer has been at work being looked at by my I.T. Man. He has run a report on my mother board and is of the opinion that it only support up to 2g of RAM!!! but if I remove one of the 2g and put an old 512m back in, the sound starts working again. I'm confused because if it only supported 2g when does the sound work when 2.5g is in the slots?

I have also been in the device manager settings and can't see any errors/exclamation marks against anything.

Hi Faladu,

I posted the above message before reading your post :-) . Clearly you and my IT guy have come to the same conclusion and my mother board don't support the 4g I have insert. What is meant by your comment about 1 2g stick with mono-channel? Would it harm my computer if I left the 4g in there and suffered without the sound as the computer is performing well with the 4g inserted(although it says its only using 2.9g of it)?
