Jan. 13 marks the end of mainstream support for Windows 7

Windows XP, as many Windows Secrets readers know, passed its "End of extended support" date on April 8, 2014. It has not had official updates of any kind since.

Funny, I have a couple of xp boxes that got a handfull of updates last week.

Clock and control panel have not changed in win-10 "so far" from 7's only one less listing in control panel which is windows update.

10's start button is controversial in 9926 I believe all prior builds had a better concept for the left column all apps now is ridiculously long when Microsoft added 26 letters to it.

Hi JaviAl:

I agree that it appears the desktop seems to be taking a backseat to Microsoft's mobility plans, and I also am NOT a big fan of Windows 10. And yes, there are still $2000 desktops (they're called high-end workstations). However, I think we have to look at what we can glean from Microsoft's path and understand why it's the right thing to do.

If it were our world, Microsoft would concentrate its efforts on what made it famous; continuing to foster and develop a top notch desktop. But by doing that, you're basically limiting yourself to the enterprise. You know, a lot of people actually hated using computers even up to the last decade (they only stuck with it to access MP3s, YouTube videos and the Internet). To many of them though, being on the PC felt to them like being at work. So while many people in 2009 and 2010 migrated from XP to Windows 7, you what most people migrated to when XP finally ran out of steam last year? iOS and Android.

Most people NEVER cared to run full applications on a desktop. They had to because that document needed printing, or that email was in Outlook. Now they can just read, share, listen and play on their tablet and phone. This is where ALL of the action is. And Microsoft is not going to sit by and not be part of it. Do you think they should JaviAl?

Now to be fair, as much I am not all that excited about Windows 10, it is still VERY MUCH a desktop OS. Yes it's simpler looking, but back ten years ago, everyone complained that Vista and 7 were too bloated with Aero, so they took out the glass element (Aero is in fact still in 8x and 10 TP). But the two newest Windows releases are far more stable than ever before. So there are less BSODs (which you cited provides less detail - what average user needs to know the segment address? Besides, maybe Microsoft support has other ways to gather the needed info without scaring the user)

What is it about 10 TP that is "less" desktop? Certainly it is a hybrid environment, but the Metro/Modern stuff is where Microsoft is going. Yes I know about less customization (that bugs me a bit too) but it is a functional desktop.

Their will alway be those that don't like a new operating system. That is not new.
The likes and dislikes will very from user to user. That also is not new.

I haven't made up my mind. It might be because I haven't spent enough time using it.
Window 10 does many things that I just don't care about.
Now that doesn't mean that others are the same way or should be.
We all will just have to make our own choice on what operating systems we use.

I have nothing bad to say about W-10. So far it doesn't add anything that I care about or want as far as I can find at this time.

I really don't care if it is free for a time period.
I don't want to talk to my computers.
I have no need for syncing a bunch of toys to my computers.
Their will always be 3rd party programs to change appearances if I so choose to but I would rather not use such programs.

I keep asking myself what does W-10 give me that I want or need.
That is what I will base my decision on when I do make a decision.

So far I have a extra Windows 7/64 Pro waiting for my next build when ever I decide to do a new build. My systems cost a lot of money so it will be awhile before the next build.
Windows 7 will assure that a new build will have a chance of working properly and in my eyes Windows 10 is still a maybe.

I have done a clean install of Windows 7 using Dell re-installation disk (Dell sent me one). I also use Free Macrium reflect backup and restore.
  • Shadow copies work as previously, the File History feature needs a little bit work from the user as it only keeps copies of files Libraries, Desktop, Contacts and favorites. In order to get a folder to use File history it needs to be included in a library. Easy and fast to do.

Please go to the Microsoft website and read that Persitent Shadow Copies is no longer available in Windows 8.x. Windows 10 also has no Shadow Copies. Also search for "Windows 8 Shadow. You're talking without knowing what you say. And without document yourself. Also probably you dont know what Persistent Shadow Copies are and how to use it.

Your screenshot examples really take the price! I hereby award you the Grand Price 2015 for "The Most Misleading Screenshots Ever Included In A Post to Give Users False Information On Purpose". You show screenshots from Date & Time and Ease of Access in Seven, complaining that in Windows 10 they look different showing the screenshots of an ALTERNATIVE way to do the same things in 10 as proof, totally "forgetting" to mention that of course the same functions in 10 can be done exactly the same way as in Seven, Windows 10 only adding another way to access the same features, the GUI for these built-in Windows tools looking exactly as they look in Seven.
Yes, those screen see the on Windows 7 and Windows 8.x and Windows 10. But Microsoft is migrating all programs, applications and Control Panel Settings to app "Settings". Can you show me the same Windows 7 Windows Update screen in Windows 10? Can you show me the same Windows 7 Calculator in Windows 10?

Problably, in the final build (RTM) of Windows 10, will imposible to see the same Windows 7 Settings screenshots that i put in Windows 10. Microsoft is migrating all.

I talk and share opinions with thousands of users and IT Managers that thniks the same:

Enough with the microsoft account. Enough. - Microsoft Community

The UI is so UGLY an there are no options to change this. - Microsoft Community

The UI is so UGLY an there are no options to change this. - Microsoft Community

These are the most voted posts on the official Microsoft Insider Program for the Windows 10 Preview (Beta).

Sorry but i'm not giving users false information. Is documented, shared and disusses with thousands of people.

Because you are talking without knowing what you say, without document yourself and according to your language and the way of expressing yourself (you are discrediting yourself) I have nothing more to discuss with you.

I see JaviAl does have a point. JaviAl you don't have to upgrade to windows 10. You can keep your current system even after extended support ends in 2020. I am still undecided myself if I am going to upgrade to windows 10.

What people got with Windows 7 was an OS that can and it Customized to the users liking. What they do not want is a fugly OS that comes in a plain brown wrapper. If Windows 10 looks anything at all like 8, it will fail.

I will keep it clean Boss.

I just downloaded and installed the new update for W-10. I'm not impressed but I will download the next update and see what happens.

When Microsoft is going to allow counterfeit Window 7 update to Windows 10 says a lot to me.

So lets take a look

1. Microsoft is going to let people use W-10 for free.
2. Microsoft is going to let people that stole W-7 use it to get a legal copy of W-10 and use it.

All I'm doing is waiting for Windows 10 that I think is worth buying.

If what I have read Window 10 will be able to do a lot of things that I don't want or need. That is okay with me. They won't make me use the things I don't want to, I hope.

I'm just looking for a better way of doing the things I do want and have today with Windows 7.

#1. doesn't cover me because I want to buy a W-10 DVD that Microsoft makes and keep it until I die.
#2. doesn't cover me because I don't have any stolen Windows operating systems or any other stolen programs.

So far people like me are just left in the dark.
That being said I haven't given up.

I've given up until around June-July to see what's going on in 10tp
There's really nothing there I like or need in 10tp.
Hell I might even wait as long as final release and go through the windows update route from win-8.1 to 10

But as far as kicking the tires before final :/ all I have is one test hdd if it dies I go bye-bye with both 8.1 and 10 ;)
7 forever and Linux :p

Microsoft has clarified the earlier statement, see the highlighted part in below quote:

Update: A Microsoft spokesperson clarified in a statement to Polygon that the upgrade to Windows 10 will "not change the genuine state of the license," meaning non-genuine copies of the operating system will continue to be non-genuine.

The consumer free upgrade offer for Windows 10 applies to qualified new and existing devices running Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1. Some editions are excluded from the consumer free upgrade — including Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to other Windows 10 enterprise offerings.

We have always been committed to ensuring that customers have the best Windows experience possible. With Windows 10, although non-Genuine PCs may be able to upgrade to Windows 10, the upgrade will not change the genuine state of the license. Non-Genuine Windows is not published by Microsoft. It is not properly licensed, or supported by Microsoft or a trusted partner. If a device was considered non-genuine or mislicensed prior to the upgrade, that device will continue to be considered non-genuine or mislicensed after the upgrade. According to industry experts, use of pirated software, including Non-Genuine Windows, results in a higher risk of malware, fraud (identity theft, credit card theft, etc), public exposure of your personal information, and a higher risk for poor performance or feature malfunctions.

Thanks Kari for the update from Microsoft.

I still don't understand why Microsoft would want a bunch of Non-Genuine Windows 10 all around the world. Some how this strategy is not sinking into my 3 brain cells.

To me all it is telling people using counterfeit Windows 7 that Microsoft don't care if they use counterfeit copies. Hell Microsoft likes counterfeit copies so much they are going to give up a new counterfeit copy of Windows 10.

Non-Genuine = counterfeit.

I think this is quite clear and not odd in any way. For the upgrade process to work as painless as possible for the majority of users, the honest ones, Microsoft cannot make it too complicated. This almost automatically means that if a pirate has managed to work around the validity and authenticity checks with the underlying older Windows, the pirated OS might be possible to be upgraded.

It's kind of funny how this is becoming a Catch 22 situation for Windows 10 opponents: If the authenticity checks were so vigorous as needed to be sure not a single pirated 7 or 8 could be upgraded, it would involve procedures and steps which would cause these users to start complaining how difficult the upgrade is made. On the other hand, if and when Microsoft chooses a bit more open approach which might let some pirates to get their pirated 7 or 8 upgraded, this is used by the opponents also against Microsoft as "This is wrong, why should it be allowed".

A lose -lose situation for Microsoft regarding these opposing users; whichever option of the two available ones they choose, the opponents will tell the other one had been the right one.

Just my opinion so don't beat up on me.

I see no way counterfeit copies of Windows 7, 8 or 10 is going to do Microsoft or legal users of their products any good.
The more counterfeit copies of Windows means the higher the price of legally bought Windows to compensate for the loss of revenue for the stolen copies.
I guess their is something to say; when millions want to steal your product it must be good.
All I'm looking for is Windows 10 worth buying.

Oh well it's Microsoft's call.

Personally it doesn't bother me. Even if MS was charging for the upgrade, the pirates would still figure out how to get it.
So I will take my FREE upgrades and move on.

This is becoming really funny although I have to admit there's some logics behind this: As Microsoft took away your possibility to complain about the high cost of this "worst ever" Windows upgrade, you have to find the reasons for complaints elsewhere.

Keep complaining, it does not change the fact that for the first year after its release the Windows 10 upgrade will be free for those users running a legit Seven or Eight. Sadly, by doing the upgrade free and easy to manage for us honest users also means some pirates might get the 10 free, too.

Really geeks, are you running out of fuel?
