Java and FF - messed up since late February

I don't know that I've ever noticed a problem with Java, but since late February, that's all I've had when using Firefox.

I'm pretty much a "get the latest updates and keep going" user, so I never really paid attention to what I was running.

Then a couple weeks ago I updated to Java 7-something, 10.15.2.3. Ugh, disaster. Go to a page that had some java content and boom, my broswer froze. With patience, it woudl come back in a few minutes, but the java functionality would not be there, although it woudl be on the same page viewed in IE.

I have tried everything mentioned on How do I test whether Java is working on my computer? and in links from that page. In fact, in each case, my settings were as recommended. Basically the only thing I found that I'd not tried was emptying the java cache, but that fixed nothing either.

I'm posting here rather than in a Firefox or Java forum because I have seen this question asked in those places, with no good answers, and hoping I get better results here.

Whatever my configuration was when the problem started, current configuration is:

• 32-bit Windows 7 at work, 64-bit at home
• FF 19.0 at both places
• Java SE7 U17 10.17.2.2

As I said, through this all Java continues to work with IE. But since the problems - which I'd never had before - began about two weeks ago, nothing I've tried, including wholly uninstalling Java, rebooting, then downloading the latest (or downloading Java 6), has worked.

You might also want to play around with Process Monitor.

Reinstall

Not just reinstall. Delete Java thru win or some uninstaller such as Revo. Download and run "JavaRA2.1". After that search you disk for anything leftover (related to Java). Then do an install. This has fixed it for me in the past.

Can you post a link to a website that gives you a java/Firefox problem?

The How do I test whether Java is working on my computer? link from the original post would be one such example. In IE, after a not-long wait, java fires up and I see which version of Java I'm running. In FF, the browser is unusable for five minutes or so, everything locked down, and then when it comes up for air, the java information isn't there.

That's one example, but the behavior is the same on any site that uses java.

If Java RA does not solve the issue, then save your Firefox bookmarks and completely uninstall Firefox.

Remove any remains of your old Firefox profile and then re-install Firefox.

A few weeks ago, I noticed that my FF Java plug-in had been disabled (somehow) by the Mozilla Administrators. I totally uninstalled FF and reinstalled it without Java. Read this article here for a full explanation:

I had similiar problems with java a while back. It would work with FF and not IE or vice-versa. First uninstall any versions of java. I mean clean out the cache using CCleaner. Then download the latest java but make sure you download the 32 bit version. Do not install the 64 bit. The 64 bit works with IE 64 bit but not FF. Use IE 32 bit version and FF 32 bit. Try it. vince

I use Firefox 22 Nightly Builds and I can control both Flash and Java to allow them to play or not to.

Firefox is controlling the Java plug-in in the stable versions because of security issues.
