So, whenever I visit a webpage that has any kind of java applet in it, the browser stops responding. This happens in IE 8, firefox, and chrome.
So far I've tried:

-uninstalling and reinstalling java
-cleaning out all temporary files
-running adAware
-running avast antivirus
-reinstalling java again

and none of these things work.

Even though you've downloaded Java, it may not be working correctly on your system. I would suggest you explore that first. The Java (Sun) website offers a lot of help and suggestions. Here are some link that you might explore to see if the Java download is the problem:

To find out if Java is working on your system visit: Test your Java Virtual Machine (JVM), and then, go to the Java website for the most recent Java downloads.

Java Help

Also, there are several different Java apps, and you may not have downloaded the correct one for your system (and for your needs). One common problem is that if you use 32-bit and 64-bit browsers interchangeably, you will need to install both 32-bit and 64-bit Java in order to have the Java plug-in for both browsers.

Also, the Java app you uninstalled may not have been uninstalled correctly. If you need to remove your current Java app, you can run this tool called JavaRA (from Major Geeks - a very reliable forum) to remove old Java versions.

Here's a link to the Java downloads page: Java Downloads for All Operating Systems

After installing Java, restart your browser and verify Java has been installed correctly. You can verify that it has been installed correctly by clicking Verify Now.
