There may be a Java cleanup tool for download. I would make a restore point first so you can get Java back if something goes wrong. But I would think you'd be able to put the latest version on a clean system.
IOW, install the latest "whole enchilada" instead of an update.
Having a problem with my java or try to put update 24 (32 bit on 64 bit system) on my Windows 7, Whenever i try to install it i get this message
