Is this a necessary update? I am a little tentative about installing things for the sake of it in case it brings problems with it. I looked on the Java site and it is confusing which one to install. Under JRE there are 3 download links for 32 bit/x86, one is an online exe, one is an offline exe and one is a baffling .tar.gz

Which one should be downloaded? I presume the jre-8-windows-i586.tar.gz can be ignored and the one to choose should be jre-8-windows-i586-iftw.exe?

Well, if you already have java7 update 51 on your system...why not upgrade.

Previously i would uninstall the Java7 Update 51 from "Programs & Features" because it is not the same branch, now is version 8.

You should install with the offline.exe installer and if you've got x64bits browser, take that one, but i'm used since IE9 to install both x32.exe & x64.exe offline installer.

I haven't notice issues since install both version 8 on my system.

PS:
You could also grab those last Java7 (JRE) in case version 8 doesn't suits you.

It's though to say if you would need this update or not ?
If you do allot of online gaming possibly but most people don't need Java browsers now days don't need Java for most websites and Java in general is just another possible exploit for bad guy to take advantage of when it's out of date and some times when it's fully updated
I personally don't have any Java installed but if I did I would read these,

Thanks for the comments guys. I do have Java 7 update 51 on my machine. I can't actually recall the last time I browsed into a site and the java applet started so I guess it's requirement is extremely low nowadays. I think because I am so nervous about any kind of 'updates' these days I will just leave it as Java 7 and dodge version 8 for now. Hopefully no site will throw it's toys out the pram just because I don't have version 8. I did browse to Java.com and the 'free java download' on the main page still directs to version 7 update 51

Yea I would stick with the traditional Java you have keep it updated and disable All Java until you actually find a game that requires it,
Which is what Java is a Gaming application,
Even if a site says it requires java and your not playing a game I wouldn't Enable Java for the site,

Its really up to you not wanting version 8 over the java7 b51...Everybody knows about that java flaws.

I do have tendency not allowing the temporary files in parameters, therefore not accumulate too much applets & traces. Its like an OS that needs to be patched once a while! Sometimes while browsing a site ask for java or some others apps, not that many though!

I think Version 8 is a production build but still pending over version 7.

Should you remove java from "Programs & Features" then reinstall? We're talking here about Java JRE for consumers only...

Java help center is largely java based, it has done me little good thus far, I have uninstalled and reinstalled java more times than I can count, web forms will not work without it, I just had to order my roommate a new computer, the website was useless without working java, google search results bring me to a blank page, context menus don't work at all
