When I'm keying in text, the cursor will suddenly jump to somewhere else in the text and insert what I'm typing in amongst the previous text.

Is part of your hand is touching or coming too close to the mouse pad on the laptop?

Temporarily disable that pad and see if it helps.

No I'm being very carefully to keep my hands arched over the keyboard so I only touch the keys I'm typing. Thanks anyway. :)

You should still try and disable the mouse pad to see if the mouse pad is faulty.

I have been unable to find where to do that. I have gone into Control Panel, Devices etc, Mouse but there is no option to disable the mouse pad. Do you know where it is? Thanks.

What's the make and model of your laptop? You must have another pointing device available before you disable the touch pad. Have you a wired mouse you could try?
Sorry I now see it is a Lenova Laptop so Try this:

But make sure you have a spare mouse ready to use!!!!

Thank you very much each of you for your advice. I think I have just solved the problem by downloading TouchFreeze. I have a wireless mouse connected through a USB stick and I use that all the time. I have already tried going to control panel and checking mouse properties but there is no mention of a mouse pad that I can find.

Thanks again for your very detailed instructions. Veronica

TouchFreeze solves some of the problems but I would recommend that as you use a wirelss mouse you should endeavour to disable the Touch Pad on your laptop. Have you tried the first option that read:

  1. Press Fn+F8
  2. A pop up will appear UltraNav device settings
  3. Chose the second option which says Enable track point only (disable touch pad)(Fig 1.1)

Thanks Mitchell65. Nothing happens when I press FnF8. In fact, my F7 and F8 keys don't appear to have a function in combination with Fn. All the other F keys have the secondary function marked on them but those two are blank.

Have already tried the second solution. But under mouse properties on my computer, there is no mention of a mouse pad. It's a Lenova G560, Model 0679.

Can you list the tag options there are in the window that opens when you click "Mouse" ie "Pointers" etc. A screenshot would be useful!

I think you will find that you will need to use the Fn F6 every time you boot up as I believe the system will revert to the default (On) setting on shutdown. If this gets a nuisance try the options in the link I sent you.
