I put win7 on an empty 80GB HDD a few days after it was released and have been using it every day since, every day up to today that is, why? Win 7 has completely filled up the 80GB drive.

Check out what this beta has done.

The Windows folder is now 7.7GB, that’s bad but not as bad as this hidden folder I’ve found

C:/ProgramData/ Microsoft/Windows/WER folder = 69GB

So im now out of space on that drive, thanks MS

Now 2 other bad things I’ve noticed in win7

What is all the disk activity, it’s a joke constantly accessing the HDD, I thought it would settle down after a week or so but no, it just loves using the HDD, I think win 7 has a thing for HDD’s, maybe a love affair or something like that.

I have 2 Gig of RAM so it’s not paging.

Ok now what is all the network activity? I’m using a network meter that monitors incoming and out going data, so far Win7 has uploaded something like a GIG of data, what is that all about?

Once booted and after a few minutes It’s using all my bandwidth preventing me from using the web.

Right I know this is a beta and the above kind of proves my point.

On a plus side win7 media center has improved, looks good and the interactive is good, that is until it crashes on ya which it does only about 8 times a day, usually when im recording something and try to watch another channel.

I hope MS address these problems and don’t release win7 until its ready or it’s going to be like Vista and people are just not going to move from XP.

Now back to the rock solid un-bloated XP, its good to be home.

i checked my four test machines, 2 laps, 2 desktops...my WER contains on one machine a maximum of 8 reports totalling about 9K....also, no bigtime increase in network activity and yes I have noticed the hard drive access occasionallybut only for a minute and that isn't unusual for the laptop when running vista.

the desktop units are clean. obviously from your description of symptom your install is wonky, i'd just blow it away and start again. you say you have 2 gb ram, I assume you have installed the 32 bit OS?

WER is Windows Error Reporting. It's enabled by default in Windows 7, Vista, and, yes, even XP.

Turning it off works the same as in Vista:
Disable Error Reporting in Windows Vista

Whenever a program hangs or crashes occurs, Vista is able to automatically send relevant information about the failure to Microsoft using Windows Error Reporting (WER), have this information analyzed and obtain a solution to the problem if one exists. In case you are testing beta versions of applications, you might encounter this situation many times. Some times the Error Reporting can be annoying, but it can be turned off using Group Policy Editor.
I suspect these error reports are a reason for the network activity. If you've accumulated 89 GB of them, you've hardware or application problems.

Win7 Media Center has been working like a champ for me. No crashes even when using three tuners to record.

It's a beta. There will be problems for some.

Yeah, that user has hardware and maybe app probs big time if the disk filled up with error reporting!

Don't blame Microsoft, or the OS for this one. ;)

Ok im getting on top of this: Windows has made 69 GIG of error reports all for this exe

AppCrash_mcglidhost.exe

There are 5039 files

There is nothing wrong with my hardware, it all works great in XP and even vista.

I am thinking that it has something to do with being in the UK, our TV and interactive service is not the same as USA and still needs some work carried out by MS.

Am using XP because Win 7 is running real bad right now.

hi
its relating to the EPG just as you suspected. You can turn of error reporting if you want too. Theres a thread over at neowin detailing just the same thing.

In all fairness to the OP, the WER really should have some sort of cap on space usage. 69GB is for one faulty file is ludicrous.

I checked mine and it's empty, so he must have allot of problems that need reporting.

I might be wrong but doesn't disk cleanup delete those entries?

no offence but if you run to the point of the same routine having taken over your pc's ability to function normally because it is orbiting sending the same error report over and over, it need be resolved or stop calling the routine. operator induced, not a os fault. there should as mentioned be a cap on file sizes though. hopefully the poster has submitted his feedback on issue.

To have all those reports, definitely indicates a problem with your installation. It needs urgent investigation before you can safely continue to use 7. Have you looked in the device manager to see if anything is outlined as not working?
But, fwiw. Turn off the error reporting meanwhile (Services tab in Msconfig) and it is safe to delete all those files (Appcrash...)
You might find that enough to get 7 running smoothly again.

Thanks for all the replies guys, they are appreciated ;)

I have now sorted this problem and just so you all know it was nothing to do with my hardware, drivers or installation of win7.

It is a beta bug that is known by Microsoft and they are working on a patch, this bug only affects the UK and New Zeeland users and it’s a bug with Media Centre guide.

The Fix:
Turning off error reporting did not stop it; I know others successfully stopped this bug that way but it didn’t work for me.

I used the registry fix posted by an MS employee found here

The Green Button - workaround for in-band loading issue in Windows 7 Beta Media Center - UK and New Zealand

This is a temporary fix and I believe it has to be undone when the patch is released.

Thanks again for all the help and pointing me in the right direction.
